An Aspirant in the forthcoming local government election in Ebonyi State, Chief Okey Mgbada yesterday said that over 25 percent of street hawkers, house-helps and those doing menial jobs in Abuja, Lagos and other major cities of Nigeria are indigenes of Ebonyi State.

Chief Mgbada who expressed concern over the development maintained that many of the street hawkers have lost their lives in the hands of hit-and-run drivers and called for concerted efforts by local government administrators to address the ugly situation.

The APC chieftain said, “Most of the problems the local government faces is lack of reachability to the downtrodden. The elected officers live far away from the people they govern; they don’t know the plight of the people.

“They don’t know if there is pipe borne water, light, healthcare service and good schools. Once a young boy or girl is 10, he or she runs to Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other cities and start hawking along the express roads endangering their lives.

“It is disheartening that we have lots of resources that can go round; most times we hear of billions of money being released but it does not translate to the people’s good life. We don’t have schools, no good healthcare systems, cost of things have skyrocketed; how do the common man survive?

“These are the things that push the younger ones into ‘get-reach-quick syndrome.’ It pushes our people to become servants in other states. 25 percent of the people that stand on the road hawking in Lagos, Anambra and other states are children from Ebonyi that are supposed to be in school. This has given us a bad name.”

The case of Ebonyi State never cease to amaze me because the state has been one of those states lucky to have good administrators as Governors since 1999 yet this problem remains.

It's not good at all and I don't believe that the problem can not be solved.

May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs!

They wake up one morning and start dishing out stats like popcorn without verifiable sources. Hence, you begin to wonder where these clowns are creeping out from.

It's people who have NEVER been to the South East that get deceived by the tales of "billionaires" flooding everywhere.

Visit ANY eastern state and you'd realise it's the same shithole as the rest of Nigeria. But worse because housing is PROHIBITIVELY expensive since everybody is a "billionaire".

One agent in Enugu took me to an ABANDONED motel that was converted to a residential buildings. Each.room is a "self-contain apartment". No water but it goes for #250K per annum.

It's NONSENSE!

Ebonyi people didn't enjoy the impact of good governance because the useless Umahi was busy wasting money on white elephant projects while his people suffered

Which Igbo person said that all Igbos are billionaires?

Southeast worst region? Imagine the audacity of your lies!

Sanusi will laugh at your comment. Sanusi said northeast and northwest are the poorest part of the world.

We know but why center on that that first? Ebonyi state is known for its inhabitants being resilient in hardwork but impoverished civil servant state that have been neglected by successive government.

What is the noise about Ebonyi people being house helps in the cities?

At least they are better than those so called diaspora entrepreneurs wallowing in drugs and criminality.

Whatever you do that brings you earning to cater for your bills aside from crime and drugs is called work.

Have you heard about dignity of labour before?

Just imagine what this one is saying, "The Paracetamol tablet killed him, but it wasn't really Paracetamol." Abakaliki 50cent is the worst governor ever in the history of governance in Nigeria. He's not just a bad administrator, he's also a bad oluwole engineer.

That's why I always laugh anytime these people are trying hard to defend themselves. 70 percent of hawkers on Lagos and Abuja roads are from their region. So they know that the analogy that they are the most educated in Nigeria is just a gimmick. Majority of their young ones are apprentices. Go to Ladipo market and see wonder. Take these people serious at ur own peril.
