Omehia Weeps At Truth Commission by Truequest(m): 2:38pm On Jun 20, 2008
Ousted governor of Rivers State, Chief Celestine Omehia on Thursday, in Abuja, wept profusely while recalling the chilling story of his kidnapped mother before the state’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He expressed willingness to reconcile with Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who, he said, is his blood brother and cousin.

Chief Omehia, who expressed confidence in the ability of the commission in achieving its objective, however, said such reconciliation must not be in public, as it is entirely a family affair.

According to him, “I’m willing to reconcile with Governor Amaechi. Anytime he is ready, he can call me, but the reconciliation between Governor Amaechi and me cannot be in the open. It is something between two of us and our wives who would sit down together and settle our differences privately, being a family affair.”

The former governor wept while narrating the story of the kidnap of his mother by militia groups in the state, but denied paying any ransom to secure her release as was alleged in a petition submitted to the commission by the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO).

Omehia, who insisted that Amaechi remains his blood brother, refused to be lured into admitting that the governor sponsored the kidnapping of his mother, as was put to him by one of the counsel, Mr. Uche Onyeguocha. He rather blamed it on political opponents.

He, however, admitted, under cross-examination, that Amaechi was the brain behind the arrest and detention of his father, who died six months after his release from police custody.
At Thursday’s sitting of the commission, Omehia and the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Oparah, took the CLO to the cleaners by accusing the body of allowing itself to be used to assassinate their character, wondering why an organization that earned so much respect and credibility could make itself a ready tool in the hands of people.

While washing his hands off any involvement with cult groups in the state, Omehia disclosed that he never, at any point, succumbed to threat of cult groups and wondered why his parents were given such inhuman treatment.

Earlier, both Omehia and Oparah described as concocted lie the allegation by the CLO linking them to the activities of cult groups in Rivers State. They expressed doubt whether the memoranda filed to the commission was actually written by CLO.

Omehia said it was ridiculous that the CLO linked him with one Soboma George, an illiterate, he said could not have had a chance in his government let alone being awarded contracts, as alleged in the memo.

Oparah said that he felt hurt by the memo, adding that if it turns out that CLO wrote it, he would demand unreserved apology from the body or, in the alternative, seek redress in court.
Omehia said the fact that CLO relied on the opinions of 30 persons out of three million people in the state showed how shallow the statistics used in the test was.
