C would be the best programming language to start with if hardcore programming is your interest. Meanwhile, if your Mathematics (you feel), is not that strong, why not try Java or some other high level language like Python.

All in all, the most important thing is for you to find a comfortable language that you feel cool with, you know what I mean?

I started with gwBASIC, then qBASIC, then Fortran, COBOL, Visual BASIC, C, C++, Java, Visual Basic.Net, C# and lastly Flex(ActionScript). The truth is that you can stat with any high level programming language. Gonna those days in which programming language like C is referred to as programmers language and BASIC is referred to as beginners language. Nowadays, most of the famous programming languages like, Java, C#, Visual Basic.Net, PHP and others could be picked up by anybody and start learning from ground up. Just hack the development kit and a good book, and brain box and plenty cups of coffee. You will be up and running.
