In order to efficiently collect taxes in the transport sector in Nigeria and with the increase in the use of Uber and all its driver-partners, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has established a guidance that will help clarify how the taxing system will work with possible drivers.

The guidance covers everyone that decides to partner with Uber and all Uber drivers using the Uber app. The information will be sent to the drivers so they can have a better understanding and what needs to be done and also seek clarifications where there is need. Uber and PwC is also working on modalities for tax reporting and payment of tax in the sector.

General Manager for Uber in Nigeria, Ebi Atawodi, said “The drivers using Uber know how important it is to pay the right amount of tax. We are proud to say all driver-partners are required to sign up for Uber with their Tax Identification Number (TIN), showing they have registered with the authorities. With the recent passing of the resolution on ridesharing by the Federal House of Representatives, Uber’s new partnerships will help all Nigerians embrace a sharing economy that can be a valuable contributor to the country.”

Executive Chairman of the LIRS, Mr Ogunsanwo, commended Uber starting that “We commend Uber and PwC for this initiative and their positive attitude towards tax compliance especially bringing the informal sector into the tax net which is a major area of focus for us in Lagos State”.
