I've been bothered by something lately. I'm 27 years old and studying at university. I've noticed that my classmates disrespect me by addressing me by my name, despite the fact that I'm significantly older than them—probably about 5 to 6 years older. It's really bothering me, and I'm not happy about it. Imagine someone I'm six years older than calling me by my name. Should I just distance myself from them since I'm uncomfortable with the way they treat me as if we were the same age? Or what'd suggest I do undecided

Respect is a reciprocal

If you have been respecting yourself, I don't think anyone can disrespect you irrespective of their age

1st, respect urself and others, and it will be reciprocated. When i went back to school To finish my programm after many years, some of the lecturers are my course mate. But i just have to focus on my goal to achieve success. So just remain focus.

So they should call you "aunty"? Shouldn't you be uncomfortable if they use that title? When I was in university, I had classmates that were 6-7 years older and called them by their names. Rest.

What should they call you, uncle or senior?

I have had course mates who were over 20 years older than me and we were on first name basis.

I am not bothered with my course mates calling me by my name, but you see that "how far?", if you want make we get problem, ask me "how far". I greet good morning, afternoon, evening, despite the fact that I am older than most of them. So I expect same.

Calling you by your name is not a disrespect, it only strengthen communication and team work. However if they're condescending, you need to check yourself. Do you play your role as elder among them. People will not respect you because of your age, what do you bring to the table and what value are you adding to people, that's what earn you respect. If they call you by your first answer or last name answer and get use to it. It will help you in corporate world too.

If you have a preferred name, print it on few T-shirt or Jersey, they will soon start to call you by it. Finally, reduce your ego or pride too.
