K. But the average Nigerian can't afford pay N184 per kWh considering our minimum wage and the high cost of living. Any other way out?

Taxes. Raise tax to gdp from 10% to 40-59%

If you acknowledge govt is paying subsidy then what is the essence of the subsidy if you insist there is a LOSS.

Is subsidy not meant to cover up loss .. or is govt paying. that talk of losing 110 per/kwh is INVALID abeg

Nigerians are paying for darkness becos of embezzlement and diversion of funds call it "corruption" ...

I insist service should reflect charges, if i enter a barber shop n the charge is 50k ... i must see service and an environment that reflect the price ...
you can't charge me 50k for haircut n show me 3D of what to expect when next i come

But

1. Service no dey reflect charges. We are paying 70 naira or less for something that cost 184 naira.

2. Subsidy is not enough. Government needs to be paying 3.7 trillion naira at least every year to cover resulting losses

i also disagree with you, for all the tariff you quoted you failed to put into cognisance GOvt subsidize power i.e there is a subsidy regime which Phcn as never debunked

The main setback in the power sector is "corruption" lets call a spade a spade

Everywhere in the world cost reflective tariff is subservient to service reflective tariff ... if Phcn is serious about cost reflective tariff then let Nigerians see a convincing infrastructural development that can guarantee stable supply

Subsides cause corruption..free money.

So how else do we raise the money.

Fighting corruption won't raise enough.

Getting a diversified economy takes time and is dependent on stable power supply.

It's either cost reflective tarrif or taxes or we beg IMF and the Chinese for loan

Bro you need to understand the meaning of subsidy and the essence.

You say subsidy is not enough, all the funds govt have invested in the power sector as it reflect any change, when you are investing in something n you are not seeing an improvement will you be encouraged to do more ..

Phcn is being run like creditors just want to recoup their money and nothing more ... these are not good signs for us at all

Oga Adelabu pls arrest the cartel or cabal shit you are talking about if you are saying the truth.

Moreso everybody know Atiku is number 1 cartel who sat on the neck of electricity in this country with his largest imported of Geenerstor in the country but one good day his cup will be full, he thought he is untouchable but one good day he will be touch.

Adelabu arrest the cartel or cabals and stop talking plss.

Do you even know in developed countries govt subsidize i.e pay subsidy

Avaiation, there is no susbidy, so they can function well

Healthcare is heavily subsidised, so there is corruption

Humanitarian is not a business.

Is there anywhere you won't find corruption in Nigeria.

Do you even know in developed countries govt subsidize i.e pay subsidy

The oversease government also take heavy taxes and run diversified economies...that is why dem afford subsidy

PLus their subsidy does not involve them forcing companies to set prices below production costs....

why must it be in Nigeria that subsidy is bad, and root of corruption ... it is not tenable jare

Because NIgeria does what the old communist world did...consumption subsidies...which are very inefficent, and which create massive debt.
Re: FG Warns Saboteurs As Power Generation Rises To 4,800MW by lapintoz: 10:06am On May 03
Aside from the generator merchants, people like Tony Elumelu, Tonye Cole, and Femi Otedola will buy government power plant NIPP built at over $1 billion dollars at $200 million. Drop the generating capacity to 10% and be collecting money from government for power they did not produce and gas they did not use.

Trillions of naira is stolen this way, and yet no power.

Tony and Femi has taken this to another level by floating these power plant on the Nigerian stock exchange market. Raised billions of naira for their pockets, at the expense of providing power for economic growth.

I hope jagaban will get the liver to deal with this cabal that includes some of his close associates. We are at a defining moment.

This matter big pass Minister of Power.....na presidency get the bazooka to blow away the saboteurs. I hope PBAT get the will!

4800MW since 2011. same thing in 2011. Increase generation, nope na coastal highway. If you work in manufacturing industry and know how much companies spend to generate electricity. That is by far the largest cost in the organization. Above labor and other cost

Lets even agree the subsidy paid is enough, the funds govt have invested in power sector since 1999 .. does it reflect any progress

Money invested may not be enough, but that does not mean progress no go dey ... but with phcn we are even still struggling to generate 3000 megawatt what we had in 1999

That's a wrong interpretation of my comment.

Corruption in the power sector happens in part because there is a subsidy. It does not mean corruption happens elsewhere because there is a subsidy

Plus ye are missing my point...the main reason for bad power is there being an inability of the sector to make profits due to lack of cost reflective tarrifs.

Once that is in place there would be profits.

And there would be no corruption because it would harm the profits. Also, no more free government money.

Kind of simple, isn't it.

Like i said, even in advance countries subsidy is a common practice ... so why is Nigeria subsidy corruption prone and the ones in advance countries are not nestle for corruption ... try answer that

Becauise

1.They pay for subsides via massive taxes. If we brought the tax rate here, many of you would be crying and weeping.

2.They do production subsides, not consumption subsides

3.They also, crucially, don't make the subsidised sector charge at a loss, like we do here in Nigeria.

The money isn't enough.

All the expert views have said we need at least 10 bn dollars every year for the next ten years to fix power. 10 Bn. We have spent probably 20 bn dollars on power since 1999. That is chicken feed.

Money invested may not be enough, but that does not mean progress no go dey ... but with phcn we are even still struggling to generate 3000 megawatt what we had in 1999

We now have installed capacity of 13000mw, can generate 7000MW On a good day, but can only transmit 5000MW. Siemens's work on the transmission system will enable us transmit 25000MW.

Still not enough...we need 33000mw to make sure everyone on the grid has 24 .7 light. More than twice that to ensure every nigerian is linked to the grid.

if i need 1 million to renovate a house, even if naa 300k i give engr e suppose do something wey go depict progress .. haba !

But you still need the 700000 to complete the job. 300000 cannot do work of 1million.

SO, let's break free from IMF, and pay a cost reflective tarrif.

We did the same for GSM, and in the early days, people grumbled and complained about paying high for high service. Infact as at 2003, we could not call between networks. Nothing like home internet.

But because we paid what the GSM People asked us to pay, they were able to attract investment, and pay for a bunch of improvements.

And they built up a lot of things from scratch...with their money.

We are in bondage to IMF Because we think that subsidy is the way. Well, because we cannot do anything about rising cost of production, subsidy costs always keep rising. And helping to push us into debt, and putting us at mercy of imf.

It's a tough choice, I effing wish it was not like that, but here we are.

Speaking on the cartels preventing power growth, Adelabu asked them to stop being shortsighted, saying there are enough opportunities in the sector.

“I know is that there are cartels and there are cabals in this sector who think their business interest will be negatively affected if we have stable electricity. But they are just being myopic, they’re being shortsighted. There are lots of opportunities available in the sector that will compensate for whatever business loss that they think they are experiencing in their current business. So, it is a win-win.

Do u support the recent electricity regulator's hikes in tariff by 240% for urban customers (band A). Perhaps other bands (band B and C) might follow suit eventually.
Do u see this as a way forward? Will this increment enable the regulators to attract investment and pay for a bunch of improvements just like the GSM? Or the increment will only be effective only if they had made it N184 per kWh flat rate across all bands instead?

Yep, we have no choice after all.

It's either we charge at least 184 per kWh, let the power companies raise prices when they need to and stop paying subsidies.

And make sure stealing of power is prosecuted.
