If the first language your child leanrs in not Igbo, you have possibly damaged the child forever. Imagine giving birth to an Igbo child that thinks in English.

The entire monologue in their head is carried out in English language. His ability to think like an Igbo is permanently removed.

You have mentally damaged that child forever. The Igboness that God gave that child for free, you have taken it away from them.

If you are living abroad, make sure your child knows the language of the host country to an advanced level before you consider.

I am Igbo, never learnt Igbo but that will still not change the fact that I’m Igbo. I have lived amongst the white man and have beaten him at his own game because I know his language better than he does.

Every book of importance is first written in English.

You will always be much less proficient in the language you speak second

even if that child's whole education is in igbo... (aka igbo geography books, igbo math books etc), the world out there is driven mostly through English. thats why even Chinko phones/computers have an English keyboard for international reach. so unless you want your child to be confined in a igbo region and only dealing with igbo people, i suggest he learns ENGLISH at best.

i was born and raised in the west from Nigerian parents, and as much as my parents spoke native Nigerian language to us, it served us absolutely nothing the minute we stepped outside the doors of our house. it was fun to speak it when guests came over but apart from that.....nada! i dont need to speak a native Nigerian language to know about Nigerian culture/history etc.

Foolish comment.
Go and ask China the economic benefit of speaking and learning Chinese, instead of English.
They protected and cherished their mother tongue, and today it is one of the most used languages on the internet.
Go to East Africa and ask them, the economic benefit of speaking Swahili.
Today Swahili is one of the official languages of the AU,East Africa Economic Forum or whatever.
Today there are many brands of mobile phones with Swahili as one of their writing languages.
Ignorance is a deadly disease.

You still didn't answer his question. That's the problem I have with most Nigerians, always resorting to insults the moment they can't answer a question. So, the Chinese language is responsible for the economic growth of China?

This is the mindset that made you to be stagnant while UAE, Japan and China have moved on since

Listen to yourself. How many people in China speak English? Yet where are 90% of the devices in your house imported from if not from China? Dey play

So the ability of the citizens of a country to speak their mother tongue is a basis for economic development?

Exactly. If you don't agree tell me a single developed/seriously developing country where they don't teach with their native language ins school.

Knowing your native language is the number 1 high esteem booster. It doesn't stop your from learning 10 other languages too when you're an adult.

Go and ask China the economic benefit of speaking and learning Chinese, instead of English.

Chinese are over a billion plus YET Chinese learn English because they know its economic importance. In fact, that is one of the reasons Chinese, as a people, propelled past the Japanese because the latter weren't too interested in learning English and exploring far corners of the world. How many Igbos are in Nigeria? Except the child would be involved in conducting business in the SE and parts of East Asia (where Igbo isn't part of an official language), it makes no sense to learn it. Even in Nigeria, learning Yoruba or Hausa has greater economic benefits than Igbo. I am Igbo as well, it hurts, but numbers don't lie. In some sectors of the Nigerian economy, Hausa and Yoruba supersede Igbo.

They protected and cherished their mother tongue, and today it is one of the most used languages on the internet.

Number game. Again, young Chinese can speak English to the extent it is deterring English-speaking foreigners from learning Chinese as when you meet Chinese, they begin to speak English to you.

Go to East Africa and ask them, the economic benefit of speaking Swahili.
Today Swahili is one of the official languages of the AU,East Africa Economic Forum or whatever.

Number game. East Africa is largely homogenous by Swahili and some cultural characteristics. However, within Nigeria, there exists so much diversity that people in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, greater parts of C/River, Edo and the greater part of Delta aren't interested in learning Igbo. These are your neighbours and cultural cousins, but they are not interested. Are those the same people you want to wheedle to have Igbo as a widely spoken language? Then, would it be Yorubas and Hausa-Fulani you would expect to learn the language? There is a reason Igbos use pidgin when transacting business with the people of the Western part of Cameroon even though there are some cultural similarities.

Today there are many brands of mobile phones with Swahili as one of their writing languages.
Ignorance is a deadly disease.

I already explained it above. It is not wrong to teach your children Igbo, but if you are residing outside Nigeria, especially in the developed world, there is no economic benefit to speaking Igbo.

P.S. If you live in a non-English speaking country, the country's official language comes first then English, then Chinese or Spanish strictly based on ECONOMIC reasons.

MANY Chinese speak English especially when transacting business with foreigners. Young Chinese learn English right from small till secondary school and then write the IELTS/TOEFL when seeking admission into foreign universities. Check the Russell Group of Universities in the UK, especially the elite schools, Chinese dominate the sciences and engineering departments. Chinese students make up at least HALF of the international students in English-taught programs at Japanese universities, and to be admitted, IELTS/TOEFL is mandatory. The same in the US. In trade shows in China, English is the second language used after Chinese. Chinese is popular because China is an economic giant and they constitute over a billion people. Is the SE a major economic zone in Nigeria and West Africa? Are Igbos more populous than Yorubas and Hausas?

Long boring story!
Yoruba and Hausa having more economic benefit than Igbo?
Why are Afro Caribbeans and Latinos learning Igbo then?
Why not Hausa or Yoruba?
Why then is Igbo studied in Kenya,China, Mozambique, and not Yoruba or China?
Why is Igbo language recognised and studied in Germany, and not Hausa or Yoruba?
Oga, you didn't need to spill out the long unnecessary story.

Onyiiobi7735:

Yes na. In some sectors of the Nigerian economy, it is better to speak Yoruba and/or Hausa than Igbo. Cocoa was over $10K per tonne some weeks back. Where is cocoa mostly cultivated in Nigeria?

Why are Afro Caribbeans and Latinos learning Igbo then?
Why not Hausa or Yoruba?

Learning because they want to watch Nollywood movies, not because they want to get jobs or transact business. It is a good export by Igbos though. That said, probably no point learning Yoruba since there are more indigenous Yorubas in the region.

Why then is Igbo studied in Kenya,China, Mozambique, and not Yoruba or China?

There are more Igbos than Yorubas in those places. BTW, when you say studied, is it a policy by those national governments or by individuals?

Why is Igbo language recognised and studied in Germany, and not Hausa or Yoruba?

Numbers again. More Igbos in Germany than Yorubas or Hausas. Again, I ask, s it a policy by those national governments or by individuals?

Again, I reiterate, I am not against learning Igbo, but in the face of economic pressures, it makes sense learning the native language of the dominant environment you find yourself.

Norway is one of the most developed countries in the world and English is mandatory in their schools despite their native languages being Norwegian and Sami. Brazil is a seriously developing country and is considered an advanced emerging economy with the 9th largest economy in the world but yet over 90% of their population speak Portuguese. It makes no sense that being able to speak ones native language is tied to economic growth, I see no relationship there. You are saying high esteem, that one is for you because me I don't get any high esteem from speaking my language. High esteem doesn't build an economy, political stability, infrastructure and international trade does. So now you want to tell me that Nigeria isn't a great country because many people can't speak their native language?

sadly some misunderstanding people will always use China as a medium, while that same person doesnt understand the world. here is the difference between Chinese language.... Chinese people people dont need to speak any other language in China because they have EVERYTHING (in China in Chinese). their books are in Chinese, their infrastructures are in Chinese, 100% of people in China understand written Mandarin, so to these people, they can survive in China without having to learn any foreign language.... now try to compare that country with you and your igbo (that is not even the main language in Nigeria).

BTW you will be surprised to know that as much as old Chinese people dont speak English, the majority of the younger generation all do learn/speak some English. here is a simple clue for you: with the amount of business done in China for export, do you really think Chinese dont need to speak English? you sir are lying to your own self.

again, as much as your children should know how to speak your native language (igbo), they will be failing miserably in Nigeria if they dont learn to speak/write English, which is the official language in NIGERIA.

English language has the most vocabulary out of all languages, it allows for more expression.

Nothing wrong in teaching your child their indigenous language, but don't knock English.

It's a global language and it's nice not to be left behind.

Madam Igbophobic, Igbo language is not confined to Nigeria, you hear.
Please take heart.
Igbo language is found in Central Africa and most other parts of West Africa, including Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Due to Atlantic slave trade,Igbo language is now spoken almost worldwide, throughout former slave colonies that are now countries of the Americas,in parts of Europe.
