Contrary to popular opinion that the 2007 general elections failed to meet the minimum standards of democratic elections even in third world countries, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Maurice Iwu, has declared the poll as a resounding success. In the 104-page report on the conduct of the elections, INEC’s Chairman states that, “The successful conduct of the 2007 general elections remains an abiding tribute not only to the personnel of the Commission, but also to the resilience of the Nigerian society which proves itself very discerning at crucial junctures.”

It is, however, commendable that the Yar’Adua administration has begun to take steps to improve the electoral framework by constituting the Uwais committee. A comprehensive and transparent investigation also needs to be conducted into INEC’s finances. Those responsible for the shameful exercise should not be allowed to escape justice. And as the various election tribunals call for election re-runs, it is imperative to create a fresh and more credible system of electoral umpires that will inspire the confidence of all.

To put an end to the credibility crisis and ameliorate the damage so far inflicted on the system, the govt. should demonstrate the necessary political will to effect changes by appointing a new Chairman for the Commission immediately.
