Language pair refers to two languages a professional is able to translate from one to the other. A translator may translate from English to Spanish and vice versa. In this case we say that he works with two language pairs: Eng>Spa and Spa>Eng.

It is possible for a translator to work translating from language A to language B but reject texts from B to A. Usually the reason is that he understands language A well but feels insecure writing in it, perhaps due to lack of practice or fear of grammar errors.

Some translation professionals work with several language pairs, and others with a single pair. What is important professionally is not the number of pairs you can offer, but how well you master the languages you write in (meaning having a large vocabulary and never making grammar errors) and how correctly you understand what you read.

The difficulty in language pair translation grows as the differences between the languages and cultures grow. Spanish-Italian, French-German, or Russian-Polish are not nearly so difficult as English-Chinese or Hindi-Japanese. In situations where the language pairs are more difficult, it becomes increasingly important that your translator have a complete and total mastery of both languages. For a translation to be accurate,

An expert translator must have a mastery of at least two languages: the language the original document was written in (source language) and the language into which you want the document translated (target language). These two languages, the source and target language, are known as a language pair. For a translation to be accurate, the translator must have mastery in both languagestranslator must have mastery in both languages and be able to understand the meaning behind the words and not just transliterate words themselves.
