Gender Based Violence: Fct Sets Up Mobile Courts by danladi02: 1:53am On May 03
The Federal Capital Territory Administration has joined other states across the country that has keyed into the establishment of Mobile Courts for quick dispensation of justice on matters relating to sexual and gender based violence against Nigerian women and girls in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.
Making this disclosure today after a meeting with the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf and 5 other High Court Judges, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye stated that “the Mobile Courts in the FCT will address harmful practices such as money marriage, breast ironing and female genital mutilation in addition to other minor gender based violence and referrals while the High Court Judges will superintend over decongestion of Correctional Centres in the FCT”
The elated Minister who spoke to the media immediately after the meeting at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama observed that the Mobile Courts became necessary in view of prevailing and unresolved cases of gender based violence and the need to restore the integrity of the female gender across the country, in her words “if there are no consequences, people will continue to commit crimes against women and the girl child and I strongly believe that with the Mobile Courts in place, there will be obvious reduction in some harmful practices against our women”
According to the Minister, other states that have aligned with Mobile Courts establishment include Osun, Ebonyi, Delta, Anambra and Imo States.
It will be recalled that the issue of Mobile Courts which has been approved earlier by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, has been on the front burner as part of initiatives by the Minister of Women Affairs among other arrangements to address the plight of Nigerian women and the girl child.
