The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti while speaking at an event on Friday argued that Nigeria shouldn't be spending huge sums of money in importing food. The Abia State Governor stated that Nigeria is blessed with good land but we are not making good use of it. He noted that food insecurity in Nigeria ought to be a thing of the past because the Federal Government should have invested heavily in agriculture. According to Otti, it is a big shame that Nigeria spent about N7.8 trillion to import food when we have good lands in the country. He noted that investing in agriculture will not only solve the problem of food insecurity but will also go a long way in addressing unemployment and socio-economic instability in the nation. Hear him, "It is a shame that a country of over 200 million people with so much arable land, reputed as the largest producers and cultivators of food items spend so much money importing food. Statistics show that in the last six years, this country has spent about N7.8 trillion to import food."

Boils down to the fact that most farming is subsitence farming, not large scale commercial farming. Subsitence farming can only take you so far. ( It's not a shame we import food though, every country imports food. And no we can't be self sufficient in rice . When our competition is Thailand and Brazil both of whose climate favors year round rice farming ) |

ARRANT NONSENSE!!! the amount of citizen a country has is irrelevant to their food importation volume... some tiny countries out there produce nothing and therefore have to import everything... if you produce less than your population needs, then you will also have to import goods. just because you have a massive population doesnt mean you cant/shouldnt import massively 2 Likes 1 Share |

Blaze14k: Obidients are not known to make any sense. There's no way you will ridicule corn and say you are rooting for agriculture and food production. But, trust an Obidient to try and rationalize it even if it means standing logic on it's head. I never thought I would see they day an Obidient would complain about insults. So, you can't take what you dish out to others? |

Don't mind the clueless govt of Tinubu. Govt of i will , he will, she will, they will yet they won't. By the time Tinubu is done dealing with Agbadorians, they will ronu front and ronu back and vote wisely come next election. I singled out agbadorians because most of the obidients already envisaged how this govt will be and are well prepared for it 1 Like |

Adaisback: I disagree. Agriculture is not only a federal responsibilty but States as well. What has your state governors both current and previous being doing to improve agricultural production. Don't come up with 'excuse ' of insecurity: every state has been receiving Security votes for years.. What have some states being doing with these allocations. Also you and I, what role are you playing in the agriculture food chain.. Do you plant no matter how small? |

Three things we shouldn't be importing if we have a responsible government: 1. Food 2. Cars 3. Clothes A government that wants to serve the people and not self, would make clear-cut deliberate policies to tackle this over, say, a specified period and it can be done in phases. For food, sincere investment in food production and food value chain development.. For cars, bring in Assembly Plants for major car manufacturers in the world. For clothes, investment in Textile firms and cotton production.. Understandably, they may not be as straightforward as I put up there but a serious government would out together a team and think.. put all the hundreds of research centres in the country to good use instead of them just doing budget every year. The people know when a government sincerely means well.. they would definitely buy-in if they see sincerity in government.. But a government that choose instead to enrich family, associates and cronies won't get a buy-in of Nigerians and won't be able to create wealth for the masses. |
