Premier League clubs will vote next month at the annual shareholders' meeting on whether to abolish Video Assistant Referee (VAR) starting next season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially submitted a draft resolution to the Premier League, which will be voted on at the meeting of the 20 member clubs on June 6. Wolves stated that VAR was introduced "with good intentions" but has resulted in "many unintended negative consequences, damaging the relationship between fans and football." VAR was introduced in 2019 to help on-field referees make crucial match decisions, but this season has seen several controversial incidents involving the technology. Wolves said in their statement: "The cost of improved accuracy has come at the expense of the spirit of our game."

The Premier League acknowledged that there are "concerns about the use of VAR technology" but expressed its "full support" for the technology and will continue to work with refereeing bodies for improvements. Any rule change would require a two-thirds majority vote (14 out of the 20 clubs) in favor. For context, the Premier League has already voted to introduce semi-automated offside technology for the 2024-25 season.
