"The men being forced to lie on dirty grounds by combined team of armed military and police personnel are traders at the Ladipo Market, Lagos, which was recently shut down by the Lagos State Government purportedly over issues with ‘environmental sanitation’ – and we all know where they hail from.

Why treat them as mere criminals – for goodness sake, these are men whose wares have been seized/locked up and they are now being paraded as mere criminals!

Anybody familiar with the Lagos terrain knows quite well that the reasons’ being advanced by the Government is hogwash! If you want to see ‘environmentally unsafe’ markets in Lagos, visit Mushin, Oyingbo, Oshodi, Barriga, Yaba and some other markets which for obvious reasons they are treated and seen by Lagos Government as ‘no-go areas’ for ‘closures’".

This is Unacceptable, inhumane, and barbaric act being meted out to innocent business men of Igbo origin by both the Lagos State Government and their Cohorts in the various security agencies.

If really they are traders, then it is really unacceptable for anyone to treat them like a common criminal.

Fashola should tread Carefully else he will alienate himself from the igbo community of Lagos state.

Enough is a enough! angry

Fashola doesn't care about Igbo votes anymore. He's not going for another term.

They are the so-called Bakkassi boys providing illegal security for the market. Non-state actors in possession of illegal arms and ammunition will be treated like criminals.

Majority of Ibos in the S/W rarely vote in elections. They prefer using such days to relax at home.

But if they think they have enough political muscle..let them flex it at the polls next time.. cool

What I wish to ask is simple -

1. Did Fashola ask these security officials to single out Igbo traders?
2. Are these the only Igbos in that market?

My reasoning is simple - if they are not the only Igbos in that market, there must have been a reason for them specifically else all Igbos would have been there. But the others obviously did something different and thus were not made to prostrate!

And would a sitting governor tell NATIONAL security officials to seek out only people from one tribe publicly and humiliate them?

It seems strange to me, is all! Nigeria prefers to see everything either as oppressor or oppressed

Nairalanders will never cease to amaze me. So the police and army jus paraded them because they are Igbos abi? Did you even bother to ask what their offence was before you cry foul? This your 'we are the victim' antics is becomin more pathetic. Them close market wey every tribe de dey trade over sanitation una say them witch hunt una. Pay tax, na una complain pass poking nose into how the money is spent as if you are blind to the various development brought by this administration. Lagos is not by force. I'm yoruba but i can't leave in Lagos. The population and ever busy life is not for me. If Its too much make una pack go back to una villages na. Haba! Complain every time! Na only una? In the north wit hausa, same. west same, Abeg make una park well well Joor.

Whoever took that picture get mind and guts.
Lots of questions begging for answers @ topic.
Who are those men?who can identify them and what they do?
If they are truly traders, how come the traders union or something(state liason office, village meeting) have not gone forward to identify them.

Some things goes beyond making noise in the Internet, get your arse off and do something.

The problems posed by Igbo traders in Lagos is child's play compared to those by Fulani cattle rearers but Fashola dare not touch the later as he very well knows the consequence.
Re: Unacceptable! IGBO Traders In Lagos Paraded By State Agents. by Demdem(m): 4:40pm On Feb 26, 2013
Am not convinced that those men are traders. infact there is even no evidence to suggest that they are Igbo, afterall not only igbos trade in ladipo. Will stick to the official report this time around, Criminals they are.
Re: Unacceptable! IGBO Traders In Lagos Paraded By State Agents. by PointB: 4:43pm On Feb 26, 2013
It is unfair to treat people like that, Igbo or not. Fashola should keep bungling simple matter every time.

To answer your question straight. Those men are security men who's duty is to guard the market. Now tell us is it a crime that they were employed to guard the market?

Mind you, Nigeria police men are known to be unprofessional in their jobs. Always quick to flex muscle with innocent men. Next thing you are going to hear is they were caught with arms and some dangerous objects which is total lies. Nigeria forces should learn how to be civil while conducting their duty, they don't have to be tools which the politicians and Govt officials use and oppress/intimidate the innocent populace.

OP, unacceptable ke? So wtf are you ibos going to do about it? Start another war?

Instead of bit.ch.ing like spineless sissies, you ibos should just do something to correct the anomaly, if you can.

Else STFU up and take things in your stride.

Come to think of it, no one is forcing you lot to "accept, the unacceptable".

Simply relocate to una hamlet where everything is done according to your norm.

Shikena!!!

Painting the govt's effort at sanitzn the state as an affront or oppression of the igbos is just a political influenced art of stupidity. The pple paraded were at first identified as Bakassi boys - an outlawed igbo organisation but they denied it and claimed that they are 18 and that one Jonathan Okorie employed them to provide security for the mkt. If u are employed as a security operatives why engage security operatives with weapon and boasting that the police. Not dislodge them till the police beckon reinforcemt which make it possible for them to be arrested. 12 out of 18 of them were arrested and as stipulated by the law will be charge to court. Crime is not ethnic is a problem to all. I advise we desist frm dis cheap propaganda and collectively contribute to the security of the state...Eko oni baje o

In conclusion your point here is that a sensible Govt in a civilized world will displaced it citizens just like this without alternative, to make matter worst the said Govt does not contribute penny to growth of the citizens. Now it is clear you Nigerians are daft more than Somalians.

1. Yes is you can not obey stated laws and warnings. The people of Lagos state elect their leaders to exactly what they did regarding this filthy market which is to protect and look out for them. The environment belongs to us all and we must all do out best to protect it and no business, tribal or financial interest and considerations comes first before our environment and public safety.

3. It's the state's responsibility to protect and uphold the laws of the state because we are not living in a state without laws or in a lawless jungle where people make up their own laws and form their own governments at the expense of other Lagosians.

4. We as a society can not accept and tolerate any situation where traders are armed with dangerous weapons while innocent lagosians innocently shop and buy goods with danger all around them. This is a public safety issue that must be addressed by any sensible and responsible government.

5. It's everybody's civic responsibility and obligation including the traders at this market to clean and protect their place of business and protect the environment in general because the hazardous materials and fluids they discharged indiscriminately contaminates and destroys our underground table water and same with the filth and rubbish they litter the canals with which constitute another major threat regarding flooding and pollution.

The way many of you color every sane action designed to protect us all clearly shows serious backwardness and lack of any personal qualities to function in a progressive and lawful society.

... And do you know what atrocities these innocent folks could commit with these fire arms at their disposal??

Who monitors their activities and calls them to order should they abuse their authority??

Are they trained law-enforcers??

While I don't support any form of barbaric treatment melted out on alleged or convicted criminals, I think these guys have a case to answer..

Thank you for helping respond to him!

Its really sad that everything is brought back to "you are oppressing us" and tribalism in Nigeria! Nobody, has right to carry weapons except licensed! If truly weapons were found on them, they are wrong, simple! Wisdom dictates that this "may" not mean they are criminals yet how can that be proven except they go to law and show their weapon licenses?

Cattle rarers dare not bring their madness into Lagos. Do you live in Lagos at all?? The Lagos-Ibadan express is the closest they can get to Lagos and that is in Ogun state. It only small village communities they can harrass in Ogun State.

Some people need to get real. The security operatives saw them minding their biznesses, rounded them up, asked for their names, found out they were Igbo and immediately told them to lie down??....Thinking like that's being delusional.

Fashola is good at what he does but in an ideal world with genuine options from both the left and right of politics and of course centrists as well. I will not normally vote Fashola for any position
