Pro-amaechi Lawmakers To Be Prosecuted by Nobody: 9:45am On Jul 14, 2013
Powerful forces with vested interests in the political logjam in Rivers State are pushing hard for the prosecution of pro-Amaechi members of the State House of Assembly over last week’s fracas on the floor of the legislature, The Nation on Sunday can now reveal.

The first step, according to sources, is the planned arrest of the lawmakers for interrogation.

Personnel of the Police and the State Security Service (SSS) perceived to have stepped out of official line may also be swept away in the aftermath of the fracas, triggered by the invasion of the Assembly by the five suspended anti-Amaechi legislators and thugs.

The fracas was recorded on video with some security officers caught throwing punches. Security agencies in Abuja are currently reviewing and analysing the video clips.

The aim is to identify who did what while the trouble lasted, with a view to deciding who to take in for questioning and possible prosecution.

Sources said preliminary analysis of the clips informed the invitation of Amaechi’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC) and Chief Security Officer (CSO) by the Police and SSS authorities in Abuja for explanation on the role they are believed to have played during the fracas.

A Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Philemon Leha, has already been appointed as chairman of a panel by the police authorities to investigate the brawl.

A source said: “I think some Rivers lawmakers might be arrested for interrogation and possible prosecution. The police and other security agencies are already studying the video clips and isolating those to be quizzed. Already, some policemen and security agents are facing intra-disciplinary interrogation over the fracas.”

It was suggested that the ongoing probe might be targeted at pro-Amaechi lawmakers.

A third source added: “As a matter of fact, some forces in Abuja are already pushing for the arrest of the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chidi Lloyds, who is currently hospitalised.

“They are accusing Lloyds as the mastermind because he had been their target all along having made the impeachment of the Speaker impossible. But pro-Amaechi lawmakers also have evidence of how they were first attacked by some of their colleagues and why they acted in self defence.”

The stalemate in the state has also forced security agencies to beef up surveillance around oil installations and put them on alert to avert turning the crisis to what happened in Egypt.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that intelligence report cautioned that oil installations in the state might be targeted by some disgruntled elements using the crisis as a cover-up.

It was gathered that the government does not want oil thieves to take undue advantage of the situation to strike at oil installations.

According to records made available by Amaechi in a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, Rivers State is “the largest on-shore oil producing State and the headquarters of Nigeria’s hydro- carbon industry.

“It is also home to Nigeria’s only Oil and Gas Free Zone as well as several off- shore oil and gas fields. In addition, Rivers State hosts multinational Oil and Gas Companies, Shell Petroleum Development Co (SPDC), MOBIL, AGIP, CHEVRON and many others.”A top security source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Both the military and other security agencies have been directed to enhance security in all oil and gas fields in the state.”

The source added that the increased surveillance was borne out of the need to protect the nation’s oil fields from being hurt by vengeance-seeking and desperate politicians.

well, before now, those who weigh the apparatchik of our seemingly avaricious democracy never thought that this presidency vs amaechi feud would take a predatory dimension. However, the beneficiaries are largely the innocent masses. I would like to suggest that the government including me and you, advocate for peace because when the lions fight, the grasses and lions are the victims. In conclusion, let us stop behaving like we are still in the rococo era. This is the 21st century.

In sophisticated countries like US and England, Lloyd would have been arrested and charged for assault forthwith. In Nigeria, we have numerous laws and yet still legally backward which is tantamount to the great number of churches we have and yet still morally corrupt. There is a clear video showing an apparent assault and yet the perpetrator is still at large. What kind of lawless society is this? The Nigerian politics is even a mess, whatever happend to the rule in Foss v. Harbottle. If it was the hoi polloi involved in cases of assault, that is when the police will act swiftly.smh.

For the fact that Mr President, GEJ, will never listen to advice from Nigerians for now,I therefore urge his Pastor to advise GEJ to make a U turn and desists from any further evil plan, if any, against Rivers State.
He(GEJ) should openly announce (not thru his ministers) on TVs or other media that he totally condemns the misdemeanor from both factions in Rivers State.
And that he is not also in support of the Jangajaga faction of the NGF.
That his love for democracy makes him to stay on the side of free and fair elections.
He should remember that Nigerians are watching the events in Rivers State closely
That "IF ONE MAN COOKS FOR THE MASSES, THE MASSES ALWAYS FINISH THE FOOD, BUT IF THE MASSES COOK FOR ONE MAN, HE CANNOT FINISH THE FOOD."

Going by the part in bold above, the writer and editor of this article are plain stupid. What do they mean by Chidi Lloyd acted in self defence? Do they know what self defence is. From the video I saw, Chidi Lloyd was the aggressor; grabbing the mace and bashing that guy on the headis attempted murder. If Chidi Lloyd was attacked earlier, he should have sought redress through appropriate channels.

I believe many of those who commented before me didn't read the above part. But don't the lawmakers know how to use youtube? They should upload the evidence right away.

In sophisticated countries like US and England neurosurgeons would be working on your brain. What lead to the fracas should be the first question, ok? Why did Bipi and 4 other lawmakers came to the assembly with thugs to disrupt the proceeding and take over the venue? Bros no let me vex for you o.

if a crisis takes place in texas that involves the federal agencies in washington d. c., the agencies in coordination with 'comrade' texas agencies in texas will set up shops [offices] in texas. they will not invite the people in the crisis being investigated to washington d. c..

the epicenter of crisis is where you will get accurate information [evidence], not far away abuja. the nigerian governance need a new rule book. i am asking myself those people who have lived abroad and know better because they have seen how things really works, if they are in the position of power, shouldn't they be advising the final decision maker?

the treasury department [economy] is affected somehow because they are now 'beefing' up security around the oil installations. okonjo iwaela should be helping to bring american way of how things work to jonathan. this is ridiculous and its making nigeria not really a port of destination for many in diaspora. this incident of thuggery even in corridor of power is shocking and who wants to be in such environment. it gives a more bloodied black eye that nigerians will have to defend or explain away. not only corruption and complete inept and complete lack of societal collective progress where individual 'if i can take all' is the normal instead of abnormal and shameful, now this.
