The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) yesterday flagged off the nationwide “check the Best Before (BB)date” campaign to curtail the grave risks and economic losses suffered by Nigerian consumers who purchase expired products.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign, the Director General of the CPC Mrs. Dupe Atoki said: “there are many instances where expired products have failed and caused fatal accidents and we hope to stem this tide of avoidable death and loss of hard earned money.”
In the exercise of its function, the CPC is empowered to demand product label showing date and place of manufacture of a commodity as well as certification of compliance. It is therefore empowered to ban the sale, distribution and advertisement of products which do not comply with the requirements.
Atoki said: “Apart from not taking seriously the need to constantly check the BB date of products that we purchase, many Nigerians are still unaware of the fact that some non-edible products like paints, cosmetics, batteries and tyres also expire.”
She also lamented the poor storage of products which further compromise their quality, stressing that the practice of storing products like bottled water and beverages under direct sunlight for weeks on-end negates the storage conditions stipulated by the manufacturers.
The Director General gave a 6-month moratorium to manufacturers to train all those on their distribution chain on how best to store their products and to stock only products that they can store properly or risk having them withdrawn from the market.
