MTN Group CEO Resigns Amidst $5.2bn Nigerian Fine by unibenstudent1(m): 7:23am On Nov 09, 2015
South Africa’s MTN Group said on Monday its chief executive will resign immediately as the telecoms firm continued talks with the Nigerian government over a $5.2 billion fine.
Sifiso Dabengwa will be replaced by non-executive chairman Phuthuma Nhleko for a maximum of six months, Africa’s biggest mobile phone company said in a statement.
MTN was fined in October by the Nigerian telecoms regulator for failing to cut off users with unregistered SIM cards.
The company said it continued talks with the Nigerian authorities over the fine

I think NCC should have a rethink and temper justice with mercy because this will have a negative effect on our economy and may lead to massive Job loss if MTN decides 2 downsize as a result of this huge fine, and may throw many Nigerians into the labour market.

Please just send this no promo, no incentive looters of a network parking. Let our indigenous network serve us. South africa extorting nigeria since 19ad. Mtn rate is cheaper in their country than in nigeria same as shoprite and super sport.

They must pay that fine! Even if they like, make Jacob Zuma resign.

Don't ever compromise on standards so that people will have respect for you. We are a lawless country because we give room for a lot of nonsense.

MTN is aware of the NCC regulations of 2011 that stipulates a fine of #200,000 for every unregistered sim. They ignored it and maintained a 5.2m unregistered sim. Letting Boko haram and kidnappers have a field day. They dare not try this in their country of origin. Methinks NCC should fine them an additional $1bn as compensation for the damages they have wrecked on this country by aiding terrorists and kidnappers.

Common Lebanese and Arabs treat our laws here like the dictates of a rat to fish while they respect theirs.

Please do the maths: 200,000 multiplied by 5.2m

No way, we shall NEVER bend the rules for a South African company, never. South Africa and Ghana have both been very very hostile to Nigerians and Nigerians' businesses. About job losses? Don't worry, NITEL is rolling out it's mobile service very soon, so NITEL will absorb all MTN workers.

This is a clear case of corporate governance rascality on the part of MTN. They were fully aware of the penalities for not complying. What were their excuses? Even if NCC do not enforce the fine, it shows how poorly the board of directors govern the company.
