Against the backdrop of uncertainties surrounding thismonth’s elections, Senator Uche Chukwumerije has alerted the nation that another June 12 is in the offing.

Chukwumerije, who was the chief propagandist of the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida that annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential elections that the late M.K.O Abiola seemed poised to win, believes the build-up to the polls looks too similar to what obtained then.

In 1993, the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) led by Senator Arthur Nzeribe, had on June 11, the eve of the election, obtained a court injunction restraining the then National Electoral Commission (NEC) from conducting the polls.

The Commission’s chairman, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, insisted on holding the election, which he did.
Again, ABN went to an Abuja High Court presided over late Justice Bassey Ikpeme and obtained an injunction restraining the Commission from announcing the result of the election.
The ensuing confusion provided the Babangida regime a convinient excuse to annul the polls to “save the nation from judicial anarchy.”

Incidentally, the National Democratic Party (NDP) is currently in court seeking an injunction to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting the elections for alleged non compliance with some provisions of the Electoral Act 2006.
Also, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) whose presidential candidate, Chief Adebayo Adefarati died on Thursday is seeking a postponement of the polls.

Given all of these and the utterances of President Olusegun Obasanjo that the election is a “do-or-die”, Chukwumerije expressed the fear that grounds were already being prepared for the scuttling of the process by anti-democratic forces.

Although the Federal Government has given indications that it would challenge the request by AD in court, he dismissed it as an act of show-boating.
“My fear is that any candidate who wins the next presidential election in a free and fair manner but who is not enamoured of the out-going President’s economic reform agenda will be deprived of the people’s mandate,” he said.

Even if OBJ wanted to do a June 12 thing he couldn't. We have a sort of democracy now, and OBJ don't have a private army. Relax he may want to do it, but we don't have a military govt now.

Not with the two vital organisations - The two agencies – INEC and police – crucial to the conduct of credible elections have not particularly helped matters. Both have lately been behaving as if they are Directorates of the PDP. Officials of INEC have many times attacked the vice president in a language that compromises the Commission’s impartiality. This is especially so with the commission’s refusal to clear Atiku for the polls despite a court ruling that it has no power to disqualify any candidate. By opting to appeal, INEC has created the impression that it has other interests beyond conducting free and fair polls.
The general belief is that Inspector General Sunday Ehindero is still in office long after his retirement age so he could be used to manipulate the polls in favour of the PDP.

For yet another, the PDP administration has so under-performed that it would be difficult not to apprehensive about the credibility of any election conducted it.
