FG Announces Free Ride On Port Harcourt-Aba Railway From May 1-4 by BeeBeeOoh(m): 9:07pm On Apr 30

The Federal Government has announced free passenger train ride for four days on the rehabilitated Port Harcourt to Aba railway.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Oloruntola Oluremi, said the free train ride would be from the 1-4 May.

“There will be free train ride between Port-Harcourt and Aba on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 2024.

“The train will be departing Port-Harcourt everyday by 8am for Aba. It will also be departing Aba every day for Port -Harcourt by 3pm. Full commercial operations resume on Tuesday 7th May 2024,” the statement reads.

That's commendable but the kinds of refurbished locomotive engines I see here look like they were treated of kwashiorkor. This is not the kinds of trains that cover Lagos to Ibadan.

I hope it doesn't break down in the middle of the forest, thus exposing its passengers to Fulani kidnapers who predominantly live in the forest.

On a serious note, the FG should extend it to Enugu, and possibly Onitsha, and see the crazy amount they will be making from that route. The Easterners are serious travellers and business-minded people.

The rot in the system is so much that whatever progress made will not have an immediate impact. Decades of negligence and failure of constantly investing and reinvesting into the key component infrastructures—road, power, education, health, transportation—to match the constant expansion is why the rot in the system.

What about corruption? Ineptitude? Ignorance?

Whatever stride we make today will never be felt because of the rots which dwaf every little achievement.

But with deliberate and constant investment, we'll get it right one day.

I strongly urge all those living in ABA and Port Harcourt to reject this evil arrangement by boycotting those antiquated trains

You cannot be renovating an outdated narrow gauge track that was built by the colonial masters over 100 years ago in the 21st century.
