On Sunday 05 May 2024, at the 2024 World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas, Nigeria’s 4x100m men’s team qualified for this year’s Olympics, after a 16 year hiatus.

The quartet of Udodi Onwuzurike, Consider Ekanem, Alaba Akintola, and Seye Ogunlewe initially missed qualification on Day 1 by placing 4th in 38.47 seconds.

However, on Day 2, Karlington Anunagba replaced Ogunlewe and the quartet upped their game.

Onwuzurike had a scintillating first leg and handed the baton to Ekanem who ran the second fastest split at 9.12s, giving Nigeria a narrow lead into the 3rd leg.

Akintola then ran the curve and passed the baton over to anchor leg Anunagba, who tried to catch Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah but couldn’t.

Amoah came through with a Season’s Best of 38.29s, while Anunagba came 2nd in 38.57s, automatically qualifying Nigeria’s male 4x100m team to the Olympics for the first time since Beijing 2008.

This year’s Summer Olympics is scheduled to hold in Paris, France, from 26 July to 11 August 2024.

During the Bahamas World Athletics Relays on 4 and 5 May 2024, Nigeria presented 4 relay teams and all 4 teams qualified for the Olympics, making it the first time in 20 years that the country will have 4 relay teams at an Olympics.
