Prince Harry and his wife visited Nigeria recently, but the purpose of the visit was almost overshadowed by a lot of noise about his dispute with the Royal Family, issues of colonialism, Nigerian politics and the war between supporters of the Royal Family and supporters of Harry and Meghan.

One person even claimed that the British High Commission released a statement that Prince Harry was not representing the Royal Family or the British Government in Nigeria, while another person complained that the Nigerian Government was hosting Prince Harry, even though he was on a private visit to Nigeria.

So, why was Prince Harry in Nigeria, in what capacity was he in Nigeria and who was his host?

Harry and Meghan did not come to Nigeria as representatives of the Royal Family or the British Government, neither were they here in their private capacity. This wasn't just some holiday or anything like that.

Many soldiers get injured in battle and some of those injuries are permanent. They could make the soldier lose his job and they could lead to a feeling of worthlessness and depression.

Prince Harry created the Invictus Games (in 2014) for injured military personnel. He served in the UK Armed Forces (particularly in Afghanistan) and he saw the impact of injuries on soldiers. The Invictus Games gives injured military personnel a purpose and helps to raise their spirits. These injured military personnel get to represent their country again and participate in sports, just like the Olympic Games. However, unlike the Olympic Games, there is no official medals table, because they want the participants to focus on enjoying the experience and they want everybody to leave with a good feeling.

Prince Harry was in Nigeria as a guest of Defence Headquarters (DHQ). He was welcomed at Defence Headquarters by the Chief of Defence Staff, he went to see the Minister of Defence and most importantly, he went to see injured soldiers at the hospital and he, together with the Chief of Defence Staff, played sitting volleyball with military personnel that are amputees or who have some kind of injury in their leg. Basically, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, was his host.

Nigeria is the first African country to take part in the Invictus Games. We took part in the 2023 edition in Dusseldorf, Germany. I created two threads about the event last year.

naptu2:

We're also really excited to have new nations join us. Let's hear it for Colombia, Israel and Nigeria.

They're having a terrible time.

Now I'm not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered that she is of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year.

Note: the word "terrible" means great.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa watched a game of sitting volleyball at the Army Officers Mess in Abuja. It's a version of volleyball that has been adapted for people whose legs have been amputated or who have some kind of injury on their legs.

Just as has happened in the Middle East, the terrorists in Nigeria have a habit of planting (home made) landmines and so some Nigerian soldiers have had their legs amputated because they stepped on mines.

I remember that I studied this issue in the 1980s and 1990s because a lot of landmines where planted in Angola during their civil war and a lot of Angolan soldiers and even civilians had their legs amputated because they stepped on mines.

Princes Diana led a major effort to have anti-personnel land mines banned and this effort succeeded in the 1990s. She also raised a lot of money for mine clearance operations (after the war) and I learnt that one of the major problems of anti-personnel land mines is that they can stay hidden in the ground for decades after wars and many civilians can get injured because they stepped on these mines.

Princess Diana also raised a lot of money to buy prosthetic legs for victims of land mines in Angola.

Thankfully we have not had as many incidents as they had in Angola, but it's still a problem in the war against Boko Haram.

Not all the soldiers were injured in battle or by landmines. The BBC interviewed one of the players who lost her leg due to an injury she sustained while representing the military in a taekwondo competition.

Prince Harry and General Musa then took part in a sitting volleyball match between Prince Harry's team and the Chief of Defence Staff's team. The Chief of Defence Staff's team won.

The players are from the Nigeria Unconquered team of military veterans and some of them took part in last year's Invictus Games.

Masai Ujiri's father is Isoko from Nigeria, while his mother is from the Kamba community in Kenya. He was born in the United Kingdom, but his family moved back to Nigeria when he was 2 years old.

He grew up (and learnt to play basketball) in Zaria and Lagos in Nigeria.

His parents allowed him to move to the United States to play high school basketball. He also attended university in the United States.

He played for basketball clubs in Europe throughout his professional career.

He retired, returned to Nigeria and began coaching youths. While taking some youths to the US, he got hired as an unpaid scout and that was his introduction to management in the NBA.

He worked as a scout for various NBA teams and rose to the position of general manager of the Toronto Raptors. He is now the president of the Toronto Raptors.

Masai Ujiri has a foundation called Giants of Africa and it builds and renovates basketball courts across Africa. I created a thread when he teamed up with the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) to renovate a basketball court in Oworonshoki.

The foundation also runs basketball clinics for youths in Lagos.

Prince Harry and Meghan attended a basketball clinic run by Giants of Africa in Ilupeju Lagos. Participants included wheelchair basketball athletes.

At the event it was announced that Prince Harry's Archewell Foundation will team up with Masai Ujiri's Giants of Africa Foundation to build a basketball court in Abuja.

Prince Harry, in company of General Musa, visited 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna to cheer up the injured troops.

44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital is one of the best military hospitals in Nigeria.

He encouraged the injured soldiers and thanked the staff for attending to the injured. He told the staff that their job is to treat the injured soldiers, while the job of the Invictus Games is to give the soldiers hope after they have been made well by the hospital.

General Musa accompanied Prince Harry to Lagos on an Air Peace flight. They paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Lagos, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina. Prince Harry told Governor Sanwo-Olu all about the Invictus Games.

Scarred by war, Nigeria’s wounded soldiers fought to recover at Prince Harry’s Invictus Games

BY CHINEDU ASADU
Updated 9:25 AM, May 14, 2024

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — One evening in November 2020, a year into his military service, Peacemaker Azuegbulam’s lifelong dream of being a soldier came to an abrupt end.

He was among a group of Nigerian soldiers deployed in the country’s grinding counteroffensive against Islamic extremists in northeastern Borno state when an anti-aircraft weapon was fired at them. When he regained consciousness, his life was no longer the same, and his left leg later had to be amputated.

He was given what he described as a chance to recover when he joined Nigeria’s team in last year’s Invictus Games and won Africa’s first gold medal at the biennial sporting event founded a decade ago by the U.K.’s Prince Harry to aid in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.

“I thought I couldn’t meet up with life, but Invictus gave me an opportunity to recover through sports,” Azuegbulam, 27, said of the games, which are in the spotlight with Harry and his wife, Meghan’s three-day visit to Nigeria.

Azuegbulam is among the Nigerian servicemembers wounded and mentally battered in the country’s 14-year-long war against Islamic extremists and other armed groups in the country’s northern region. They say they feel better and are recovering faster since last year’s Invictus Games, when Nigeria became the first African country to compete in the event.

Though sports had been part of the recovery process for Nigeria’s wounded soldiers, military officials said the Invictus Games offers them a better chance, especially in dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Eighty percent of our soldiers that have been involved in this recovery program are getting better and their outlook on life is positive,” said Abidemi Marquis, the military’s director of sports at the Nigerian Defense Headquarters.

Security analysts say it can help deal with the mental health crisis that is overwhelming Nigeria’s overstretched and underfunded military, but only if it is in addition to measures to improve the welfare of soldiers. In the past, soldiers have complained of poor pay, old weapons and fatigue.

In Nigeria, Harry played an Invictus Games-related volleyball match with wounded soldiers in Abuja, the capital, and visited a military hospital handling critical injuries.

The game with Harry was “like a lifting of our spirits,” said Lance Cpl. Dean Onuwchekwa, an explosive ordnance disposal specialist whose upper body was damaged in 2021 by a homemade bomb he was trying to disarm in Borno state’s Mallam Fatori town.

“It is so hard just waking up and discovering that you don’t have hands, are left with only one eye and 25% of your hearing – it was like life is over,” said Onuwchekwa, 45.

He said that after explosion, he more than once thought of turning his gun on himself as he battled PTSD, bouts of panic and nights filled with terrifying dreams and days filled with memories of the blast.

Last September, he was selected to join Nigeria’s team of 10 to attend the games, where he participated in snowboarding.

“I was down when I went there but coming back, I became alive,” he said, his functional left eye widening in excitement.

Sitting beside him was Sgt. Monday Peter, whose legs were amputated after an armored personnel carrier shattered them as they patrolled villages in northwestern Kaduna state in 2011.

“I didn’t know what sitting volleyball was before,” Peter said of the game played with Prince Harry. “But today, I can play it, I can play basketball, I can even swim. The Invictus Games have built my confidence and my morale.”

Studies have shown that sports can help veterans heal from the physical and psychological issues related to their combat experiences. Sports help, for instance, to enhance social connections, stress management, self-esteem and mental wellness, according to Dr. Maymunah Yusuf Kadiri, one of Nigeria’s most popular mental health physicians.

“These soldiers develop resilience and a fresh sense of purpose,” Kadiri said. “Sports provide them with a glimmer of hope and solace as they negotiate the difficulties of life after the war.”

Having served in Afghanistan as an Apache helicopter copilot gunner from 2012 to 2013, Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has also experienced PTSD. In his recent Netflix series about the Invictus Games, he said he didn’t have the support he needed when he returned home from combat in Afghanistan in 2012 and that it triggered emotions that he had suppressed after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12 years old.

He later started the Invictus Games, modeled after the Warrior Games in the United States, to give servicemembers and veterans the challenge of competing in sports events similar to the Paralympics.

Harry visited the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital for critical injuries in northern Nigeria. Among the wounded soldiers there, Cpl. Iziogo Onyema, 31, had his right arm reset after a gunshot wound. A bullet went in and out of Sgt. Emmanuel Oyesigi’s stomach during an ambush. An explosion ripped through Private Habu Sadiq’s eyes.

But even the prosthetics being produced at the hospital were not being used by some.

“It’s partly stigma,” Gen. Ndidi Onuchukwu, the hospital’s chief medical director, told Harry when he asked why they were not using the prosthetics.

At the officers’ mess in Abuja, servicemembers spoke freely about how they dealt with the shame in the past. Now, they say, they are no longer bothered when people stop to look at the burned or damaged parts of their bodies.

“After I got injured, it affected me mentally, emotionally and physically,” Azuegbulam said. “But today, I am living proof of resilience and hope.”

The Duke of Sussex Champions Invictus Games Foundation in Nigeria Visit

May 13, 2024 - Abuja, Nigeria: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just returned from a mission to Nigeria on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation, showcasing the power of resilience and the spirit of unity.

The visit, marked by a series of sporting engagements and heartfelt interactions, was to promote the importance of mental health awareness and support for veterans and active-duty service members. The trip followed the 10th Anniversary of the Invictus Games Foundation, which was marked by a series of events in London including a Service of thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Within Nigeria, it formed part of an Invictus Games Foundation funded sporting camp, supported by Monster Energy Cares.

On arrival, the couple were welcomed to Nigeria by Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, at Defence Headquarters in Abuja. There, the Duke of Sussex outlined the visit’s aim in celebrating the power of sport in recovery, highlighting the resilience of the Nigerian Unconquered members of the Invictus Community. General Musa provided reflections on the role sport plays in giving hope to wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. With the challenges faced by the Nigerian armed forces, particularly the threat posed by IEDs, the solidarity of the Invictus community has a valuable role to play in providing recognition and support for those who served.

The Duke of Sussex later visited the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, in Kaduna, where he witnessed first-hand the recovery of wounded and injured service personnel and veterans. Col NS Onuchukwu, the Chief Medical Director, provided a tour of the facilities during which The Duke met with 50 members of the hospital included former Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023 competitors. The facilities includes a leading physiotherapy gym and a high-tech prosthetics lab – a donation from Germany.

The next day, The Duke visited Nigeria: Unconquered’s training session, a local charitable organisation that supports wounded, injured, or sick service personnel and veterans, and was born from the Invictus movement. They support Team Nigeria’s participation in the Invictus Games, and during this training session, categorisers visited from the Invictus Games Foundation ahead of the upcoming Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.

Categorisers for the Invictus Games Foundation were in Abuja to assess Team Nigeria in readiness for the upcoming Games. Unique to the Invictus Games, this categorisation process involving volunteers also takes into account the impact of invisible injures on the ability of competitors to participate in sporting competition.

At this session, The Duke of Sussex joined in a game of Sitting Volleyball, one of the core sports of the Invictus Games, along with Nigeria’s Chief of Defence staff. This was followed by The Duke and Duchess attending a reception with The Widows Association and military families to learn more about the role that family members play in the recovery journey.

At this reception, Lance Corporal Peacemaker Azuegbulam, who met The Duke and Duchess in Canada at the One Year To Go event earlier this year, thanked The Duke for making the games a reality, and said, “It has given me a purpose. My disability does not hinder my ability.”

The legacy of Nigeria’s participation in the Invictus Games continued, as a 3D tour of the upcoming Nigerian ‘Invictus Centre’ for physical and mental rehabilitation was then introduced. This centre is soon to be developed and represents a continued focus on the importance of sport provision in recovery.

Nigeria’s participation in Invictus Games Foundation’s activity is not limited to Invictus Games events. Last year in 2023, Dean Onwuchikwa joined international participants at a Winter Sports camp in Colorado, USA where he learnt to snowboard for the first time. Run by the AFPST, this camp was part funded by the Invictus Games Foundation to introduce an international cohort to the power of adaptive winter sports. Dean, who was injured in a mine explosion losing both upper limbs, said, “Someone can be healed through my story, or someone can be healed just seeing me snowboarding. So why would I sit down?”

Categorisation.

The next Invictus Games will take place in Whistler, Vancouver, Canada in 2025 and a team from the Invictus Games Foundation was in Nigeria to categorise Nigerian veterans that might take part in the event.

They examine the injuries of the veterans in order to place them in the correct event category. They also look out for invisible injuries which might affect a person's ability to participate in sports.

Harry is doing a good meaningful thing, He is the Prince the world loves, he should progress by negotiating for wars to stop so there will be no injured soldiers.

He was close to Desmond tutu too,so he can continue in his strides. May God bless his heart and Meghan by his side.
