The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that unbeknownst to young cryptocurrency traders in Nigeria, terrorists are using their trade to fund terrorism in the country.

The EFCC boss said some of the people who receive money to trade in cryptocurrencies do not know that their financiers are sponsors of terrorism.

He added that some of the 1,146 bank accounts recently frozen by the anti-graft agency were conduits for terrorism funding.

Olukoyede revealed the development during an event organized by some Civil Society Organizations in Abuja.

The programme, titled, “Multi-stakeholders’ national dialogue on preventing terrorism financing and violent extremism,” was held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotels, Abuja on Wednesday.

Olukoyede revealed, “Some of you are aware of our activities in the area of investigating virtual currency trading and the likes of cryptocurrencies.

“They are potential platforms to fund terrorism. A lot of us don’t understand that. Some of our discoveries during the investigation of some of these platforms were mind-boggling.

“We thought Binance was a major one. Yes, it was. We are prosecuting them. But there are other platforms we have discovered.

“They used some of these young men. Some of them don’t know that the people who gave them money to trade are people who fund terrorism.”

The EFCC boss further said there is a need to adopt technology in tracking money used to fund terrorism in the country.

Olukoyede narrated how he was informed by a friend in the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, that dollar bills across the world can be tracked with technology.

“It is important for us to adopt the use of technology,” he said.

“I was comparing notes with an assistant director in the FBI — a friend of mine. He said: ‘My brother, from our systems in the US, we can track every printed dollar anywhere in the world’,” he added.

The EFCC boss added that Nigeria must get to that stage where technology can be deployed to track naira notes used for terrorism funding.

I am 100% convinced that fhis guy is secretly DUMBER than a truckload of bricks.

The worst part is he assumes everybody is as dumb as he is.

First of all, he definitely does NOT have a friend who is the Assistant Director of the FBI. An airhead like this guy would have namedropped him like 20 times instead of something vague like "a friend of mine".

Plus, the Assistant Director of the FBI would know that it's completely IMPOSSIBLE to track any Dollar notes. That's why criminals like drug dealers do deals in CASH.

They merely have SECURITY features to make them recognisable as genuine and not counterfeit. And the Naira notes have similar features.

This guy is always so eager to spew LAMBACIOUS shiiits and exaggerate mediocrity.

He's the same guy that the EXCITEDLY held a press conference about how a 17-year old Yahoo boy got his BVN from his phone number.

This guy does NOT know what he's doing. But that's okay because he fits right in with the rest of Tinubu's appointees.

This man talks too much.
There are somethings you don't say.

Let's assume that his so called friend in the FBI gave him a classified information on how dollar bills are tracked, "MUST HE COME AND SPEW IT TO THE PUBLIC,?"

APC government pays billions of naira to terrorists as ransom to free kidnapped victims. That's a large pool of fund for terrorists to continue their terrorism.

Very true .

During the incompetent Buhari days , a guy was arrested for directly funding bandits and Boko haram.to the tune of over a billion USD..

The story died ,just like that ..

Then another man , a Fulani from Niger Republic ,collected $450m from the Nigerian army to supply them with weapons and eloped with the entire sum. Till this day

Which of the terrorist?

No terroist in nigeria is smart enough to use crypto without being caught

You want to fight terrorist using crypto n you are fighting Binance... Is that not foolishness?

A terrorist smart enough to use crypto would then use exchange? Binance? Bybit?

APC people are not smart at all

Trust me with how bad our military personnels are and how corrupt they are

A group of 5000 people who understands crypto currency can easily cripple nigeria in 6 months

Crypto should be banned in Nigeria... We take advantage of loopholes alot... we are not mentally ready and capable of handling the don'ts of crypto... alot are so foolish not to know that pressure on crypto also affects our currency... crypto is not traded in Naira , its traded in dollars , and worse of all , it can be untraceable, its a hub for criminal activities because u don't need the conventional banks to run it

The world is evolving you are either adjusting or falling behind, why don't you use donkey or bicycle to drop your kids at school, or are criminals and bandits not using it too, let the government ban cars, phones..

I wonder how some of you think...

Beverlyjean:

Are u dull or what?? Or u think u are smarter than the countries that have banned crypto.... there are some sort of technology that can't be accepted in some places due to mentality... our economical system is very weak with lots of loopholes, coupled with the mentality of Nigerians .... are u dumb or what , not to understand the negative effects

Dumb government, what have they not blamed. With or without crypto terrorism has been in existence. Terrorism was prevalent during Jonathan time and crypto trading wasn't popular back then. With the way they are blaming crypto, someone would think it is only in Nigeria they trade crypto. They blamed crypto for falling naira price, now again blaming it for the cause of terrorism. What next will they blame on crypto?

..all I can say is propaganda.

Is Nigeria the only country doing crypto trading? Nigeria is not even among the top countries on crypto trading. Nigeria is just below 1% of total crypto capital. What the noise over crypto. During good luck Jonathan and buhari there was crypto trading. How come in less than one year crypto is now the problem of economy downhill.

This guys just want to control everyone and nothing else. Crypto has come to stay and nothing they can do. Even in China that's among the top country doing crypto the government couldn't stop in it. As rigid as the country is. Make them just the play. Crypto is here before tinubu and crypto will be there after tinubu

Most of them talking about crypto don't even know anything about it. And how it function and why people are trading it. Nigerians overseas prefers to send money to Nigeria via crypto and Nigerians in Nigeria still prefer to send money to abroad by crypto it's the reason the trading and demands are high. Not forgetting those that prefer to store their money in crypto then naira which turns out to be the worst currency in the world.

If you have crypto currency you can easily change it to any currency in the word anywhere you are. Better than carry physical cash even dollars.

The CBN banning of dollars card is one of the big reason crypto is very popular among young Nigeria

Open the naira to dollar card it will reduce crypto dependance for some people though
