Engage Ekiti youths or forfeit Your Job Ekiti Government warns contractors

Ekiti State government has again warned contractors handling various projects in the state to comply with the local content laws of the State especially on the employment of indigenous skilled labourers and professionals to carry out their jobs.
Director General, Bureau of Local Content in Ekiti State, Olalekan Ijidale said the law stipulates that 40% of Ekiti indigene are expected to be employed by the contractors but noticed that majority of the contractors are not complying.

Ijidale who spoke after a visit to Craneburg site noted that his office would not tolerate a situation where contractors engaged by the state would bring in all their skilled labourers and professionals from outside the state saying such is an aberration and would be resisted.

He said:” I am disappointed this afternoon after getting to the site and noticed that only a very few of our youths are engaged to do ridiculous jobs while majority of the workers on site are non indigenes.

” This attitude is against the Local Content law, I have taken my time to meet with contractors and also visit their sites to educate them on this law but unfortunately, they seems not to be ready to comply.

“We see this action as a deliberate affront against government and we will not tolerate it any longer, Ijidale affirmed.

“We have graduates here who are engineers and have relevant skills in construction and so on, if they are not engaged how would they gather experience, recruiting Ekiti indigenous for menial jobs alone is not acceptable, there must be balance.

“Any Contractor found guilty will surely face the consequence
According to him, the contracts offered to the contractors are financed by the tax paid by the indigenes of the state hance they can not be left unattended to while strangers come from outside to get what belong to them

Ekiti State shouldn't set a precedence that will burn this country down. What if other states starts doing exactly the same. There are Ekiti engineers and indigenes working in construction in other states. As long as they are Nigerians they should be allowed to work. If the commissioner or governor have people qualified they can negotiate than making it law.

Imagine someone from Kansas City not given a job because he doesn't live in Dublin

Haa, see how tribalism has started.

Education and universities started this first, where indigens will get admission first before other people from other states. Now employment has set in.

No hope for an Osun man coming to Ekiti to contest for house of rep undecided

you clearly dont know what you saying...shey na because ekiti state government openly announced it...this thing happens somewhere somehow in every state...Idorama in Eleme PH , we were contracted from Lagos here to that place...it's very big working space with many contractors working on...there is a percentage of indigene that must be employed, unless you are not ready to work...and these guys are uncontrollable, dey are mostly uses as Mate( that's what we call them instead of labourers)...once it's 5PM they closes...even though situation might warrant that they close at pass 5...they will clean up Nd just go...they resumes to work in the morning at anytime...these guys are annoying and very daring

It got me surprise when I see the so call leader's of tomorrow ideas on some critical issue, the state is only asking the contractors to engage competent indigenous youth of the state, which is clearly stated that at least 40%. Not only to engage them as labourer. We have competent youth in each state and that will serve as a benefit to the state cause it will improve local development and sense of belonging. Note everything in this world 🌎 have both advantage and disadvantage, only depend on your motive and perspective. This is a wake-up call to all state.

That's why measure and serious policy need to be put in place in order to separate the serious minded from those that have nothing to offer. Everyone can never act the same.

If you actually understood my point. I am not saying community participation is wrong just don't make it legalistic. It can be a policy but it shouldn't be law as quoted by the Ekiti executive member. Many construction companies always recruit bulk of their workers (labours especially) from their immediate environment and even if the government or any executive member has a candidate most times talking to some of the contractors will employ the individual on a CSR basis but it shouldn't be law in a multi diverse nation because if other states starts passing the same law because of the antecedents, infact the consequences are just better imagined.
