THE PROBLEM OF ADMISSION IN NIGERIAN INSTITUTIONS

It is a shame that our government could not solve admission problems in Nigeria.

I do not see any reason why every students that have the entry requirements are denied the admission to study, there are space in every school to build more classes, institutions can employ more lecturers and acquire more equipments to accommodate the students.

Why s...hould a student take jamb exam, score the required mark, yet he would still come back every year to take the same exam again? is this not exploitation? why cant he use the same result since he or she had passed already?

Nigerian students are now trooping out of the country with billion of naira every year to other countries just to get admission. How are these other countries doing it that after admitting their own students still accomodate other nationals? Nigerian students are every where, ghana, south africa, benin republic, usa,uk,france, malaysia, saudi to mention few. Most of these students are not going out because they want to,but because they could not secure admission here in Nigeria despite having the requirement. The process in getting admission in other country is more easier than getting admission in our own country, even the fees involved in securing admission in other countries are lesser than our own country. After having the Olevel requirement, A student have to take jamb,Post UME etc all totaling about N20,000,yet the student would not be given admission, he would still have to wait for another year and spend the same amount with no hope still.

This calls for attention.

The admission problems in Nigeria is a very big concern to most people. Many of our qualified students cannot gain admission to the public tertiary institutions. The private schols have prohibitive school fees. The very rich send their wards to these private high institutions and overseas for eduction. The poor languish here without admission. Any wonder the rate of armed robbery and kidnapping is on the rise? These are signs of a failed country, the result of bad and planless leadership over the years. God help us. Ameen

That is the order of the day even in this country. Our leaders visionless and clueless don't mind them. Just try to get to the top to correct correctable errors.

The problem has to do with capacity ( Human resource and infrastructure ), student placements into ( University, Poly's , Colleges, Vocational, Technical and Commercial schools ), Flawed admission policy, procedure and management.

Why does the whole population of a country have to go to the university? Check this link below to see the percentage of population in Western Countries going to University.
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/090908/t090908b1-eng.htm

If everybody goes to university, who will mount other sectors of the economy? Ever since HND discrimination started, we lost it as a nation. Teachings in polytechnics are not even what they are suppose to be anymore in the sense that they are no more equipped to give sound technical education instead it has been converted to more of theoretical education and they still call them technical schools. We need to go back to the drawing board as a nation to redesign what system we want for ourself as a nation.
Also @ OP, don't forget that majority of these so called qualified people that you are talking about are actually not qualified but got the fantastic grades and result through 'runs' which has become the order of the day in Nigeria. Eradication of 'runs' is what we should be looking at so that truly gifted students can be identified and nurtured to help build Nigeria.

Thank you my brother and that was what i was saying about student placements because the focus is too much disposed to universities while the other sectors have not been filled or developed better. The discrimination as you said caused alot of problems aswell and i even had this Nigerian education system discussion with my brother yesterday. We need to fix it now or we will surely regret it in the future, you need to see the amount of Nigerian students going to study in other African countries.

UME is just a clandestine system. Most of what students learn in the first semester/year is no more than what is thought in the last year of secondary schools. So instead of doing JAMB and all those silly exams, it would be nice if the admit students with good SSCE grades, the first year could be used as a stage to weed out the poor performing student.

I am currently writing a book that will correct this ill. There is no Admission problem in Nigeria we are the problem to ourselves.

My brother, do you know 80,048 candidates applied to study in University Of Benin?

71,369 of them applied for just 20 Courses

The rest (wise) 8,679 of them applied for the rest 67 departments

Now see this statistics

No (good) department takes over 200 so the above means 71,369 people will contend for 4,000 spaces meaning a cool 67,000 people have wasted their time buying JAMB forms and have ruined a whole year of their lives

Now see more statistics below

SCHOOL........NO THAT APPLIED..for..DEPARTMENT..........REAL SPACES(IF 200 PER DEPT)....NO OF RUINED CANDIDATES
UNILAG............65,634..........................22............................4,400....................................61,234
UNIZIK..............70,805..........................24............................4,800....................................66,005
UNN..................63,918..........................22............................4,400....................................59,518

Dear sir,

I therefore take the honor to announce to you that near 250,000 people applying to study in just 4 schools have wasted their time and ruined a year of their lives

Thank you!

And we say we ve leaders in this country?!
Re: The Problem Of Admission In Nigerian Institutions by Bontee: 7:14pm On May 23, 2012
We have to re-model the admission process and make to do with one exam that includes Jamb and the schools. The system should be a joint process such that you are not restricted to a particular set of school but to a set of possible programs to study. The process makes use of a database such that students are excluded from this database as they accept admission offers.

I dont think its the government's fault at all. Every Nigerian student wants to go to university, and yet, not every Nigerian student is academically excellent. Hence, if you are not good enough for the competition, and yet, you go ahead to join the competition; Why shouldnt you fail?

Everyone ought to know themselves, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Getting 200 -220 and expecting admission is mere wishful thinking except if you have some powers that be working behind you and its that simple. Hence, if you cant secure something much higher, why not try other places where you are likely to make it?

I've seen really brilliant people make it into the universities of their choice and i know people still make it on merit. But the question is CAN YOU BEAT THE COMPETITION? its that simple. IF you cant, you'll only waste your time and money and come back to nairaland to abuse Jamb and its officials.

olas2u: You are even lucky to have private schools, during mytime it was either you are in or out.

Thank you bro during my time the cut of mark for mathematics science, unilag was 200, I scored 205 and still couldn't get admission, even with my admission letter "stronger people" stronger then me, who I know who my parents know, took my slot I look back at that time and feel pity on myself NEPOTISM nigeria "tufiaka", medicine was 265, now I guess its 180 to study medicine, but let's look at something a bit important digressing, to add to the level of insult, a unified examination was taken and still yet different cut off marks adopted, for entry into the institutions, still not solving the issue of discrimination, are these people serious at all? if its the polytechnic lecturers or managers that are not interested in bring these institutions apar (NBTE) veto power Presidential directives still exist, except they are not interested in doing the right thing and they are paying lip service to this issue, so many things have changed, their were only a few universities and very few state owned universities LASU, OSU in fact it goes way back, primary school days, common entrance examination and G2 exams, its either you were going to a federal government college or like my parents would say then a Jakande school. Things have really gone down south.
