Feeding Your Rabbits to Maximize Profits and Keep Them Healthy Throughout Their Life Time

Just like humans, rabbits deserved healthy food, and a well-balanced diets to keep them healthy and productive.

Rabbits enjoy good meal, you can feel and see it in them it makes them excited and happy, and I believe the goal of every prospective rabbit farmer is to see that his rabbits are full of life, healthy and are doing very well.

Here are some variety of feeds you can give to your rabbits to keep them healthy all year round, and also to succeed in your rabbit farming enterprise:

Pellets
Rabbits do well when you served them with a very good pellets from a reputable feed mill that contains all the necessary ingredients and nutrients.

Feeding them just corn, wheat offal, or maize bran and soybeans might not augur well for their health and survival, it may not contain other necessary nutrients or vitamins that are all imbedded in pellets.

Before using soybeans in your home mixed feed, it should be properly roasted, because soy beans contain trypsin inhibitor which is a growth inhibitor it interferes with protein digestion and are not too good for rabbits and other farm animals.

In view of this home mixed feed should be discouraged using a good pelletized feed should be a better option.

Rabbits get excited when you served them with pellets they prefer it to mash. Nursing does should be provided with some handfuls of pellets everyday with at least 18% protein contents, while fryers and growing rabbits will do well with at least 15% protein contents of pellets.

Care should be taken when serving or feeding buck or does pellets so as to avoid obesity which can result to some serious fertility and health issues. Just served them with the quantity they need to thrive well.

Hay
Clean, dry and mold free hay should be readily available to rabbits as much as possible.

It contains fiber needed to aid good digestion
It also helps in shaping the teeth and in wearing it down( as their teeth grows continuously)
It helps in maintaining good dental health for rabbits.
When choosing hay, make sure it looks very green and dry, the greener the better. Especially when it is cowpea and groundnut leafs hay, it should be mold free, not wet or damp buts smells nice and looks fresh and palatable.

Preferable depending on the region or part of the world you live in. You can provide them with pellets in the morning hours between 6:30am to 8:30am.

Feed them with hay or other vegetables to supplement their feeding in the evening 6:00pm downwards. Over the years my rabbits have enjoyed good health and made serious progress using this feeding pattern.

Leafy Vegetables and Grass
Rabbits love clean green leafy vegetables at all times, make sure that it is clean and dry free from sand or dirt.

From experience rabbits eats virtually most green leaves, grass and vegetables once you introduce it to them just be observant once they don’t like it withdraw it immediately if you insist it may cause harm to them.

Once you notice their wastes is soft and watery withdraw the new leave or grass you just introduce.

Depending on the region or climate you live in, for instance in most of West Africa particularly Nigeria we have two major season Dry and Wet season.

During the rainy season we have abundant grass and green leaves everywhere. While during dry season it is difficult to find them.

In such situation you can used hay from cowpea and groundnut that had been dried and stored for use during the dry season.

Rabbits feeds on other leaves that are also readily available during the dry season like Mango leaves, Banana leaves and Carrots leaves etc.

Rabbits feeds on the above mentioned leaves, but you have to introduce it to them gradually if they are not used to it, and if they don’t like it withdraw it immediately to avoid any health issues.

Rabbits Love Treats
Once in a while provide them with treats such as: carrots, mango, banana etc. in small quantity so as not to cause any health complications once you notice any abnormality in their feces stop giving them immediately and try another one.

Rabbits love varieties, you have to keep trying until you discover what they love best and does not cause any health issues to them. But great care must be taken when given them treats.

Provide your Rabbits with Fresh Water at all Times
Always provide fresh, clean drinking water to your rabbits at all times to avoid dehydration especially in hot weather.

Depending on the container you used in providing them with the water such as heavy ceramic or metal container or drip feed bottle it should always be free from dirty, algae or mold forming substance.

Always wash and rinse the container each time you are about to provide them with water. Once in a while provide them with multi-vitamins in water to reduce stress and help them eat in a relax atmosphere.

Conclusion
In all these points explained above, two things are very important if you are ever going to succeed you need passion and compassion, you have to love your animals, enjoy what you love to do, you will never be stress out, rather you will reduce stress to the barest minimum.

Secondly you have to show compassion to your animals, when they are sick treats them, help in restoring back their health, so they can be at their optimal performance.

Always provide conducive atmosphere for your rabbits to thrive well. Shade should be provided to protect them from direct contact with sunlight and to reduce heat.

Nursing, pregnant and ill rabbits have special and different needs so always seek the advice of a veterinary doctor or professional on rabbit’s diets so as to keep them healthy.

Protect them from adverse weather condition, protects them from rain and other predators within and around the farm area like dogs, snakes and intruders that may cause harm and discomfort to them.

Always exercise caution when giving food to your rabbits, if you are not sure of their proper diets always ask a professional or your veterinary doctor to avoid costly mistake that may lead to serious health issues
