A good question from one of my followers
Get your own questions about your observation, challenges on your farm and it will be answered immediately

This is a veteran and an insightful post@Op. Have been following with keen interest cum the comments. Well, I just have few questions to ask.
1. Doesn't plantain require manure because you didn't mention such? If YES to using manure, how often do one apply it (give the range of weeks or months)
2. Should it be planted in a row or scattered form?
3. Please like how much will it cost from procurement, operational cost(s) et'al to harvesting excluding land (Ekiti precisely)?
4. What is the present market price for a dozen of plantain using Lagos and Abuja as a case study. I can be reached via adekanmi_adewumi@yahoo.com. Thanks
Thanks for following
Plantain require manure and the best is the poultry manure.
if you use tissue cultured suckers, you have to apply poultry dung 2months after planting for maximum yield.

If you apply a good quantity of manure once, you dont need to apply again.

if you plant them in a scattered form, management of the farm will be difficult from ease of weeding, fertilizing. You will not also be able to determine accurately the numbers of suckers on the land.

Cost of production differs from location to location.i may not be able to give you accurately the cost of production in Ekiti.

In the market, plantain are sold per bunch.
#800-#1000/bunch.

I said yesterday that i will show you the right time to cultivate various crops for profit.
(For those agro-preneurs that want to supply the markets in the southern part of nigeria )

If you are adding value to the produce and not
selling directly the produce, this might not apply to.you.

These are the best time to start cultivation for good profit.
corn - Feb 20, 1st week in Sept
Tomato,Feb 15,Aug 15 (nursery should have been started before this time)
Cucumber - April
Watermelon - Feb and Sept.

You can as well drop the crop you want to venture into this season and i will be willling to.advise you the right time to start cultivation.

endy231:

it does not depend on source of water, your planting time depends on the market you want to serve.
if you are serving agro-processing companies, there might be changes in those time of planting but if.not then you might have to plan your planting dates well in order to meet the high price of produce in the local market.

Last 2 years, rain have always begin from january 8 although not consistent.
Rain should start this year by february, with at least a day of rain in a week.
With each rain/week, land preparation (1st&2nd ploughing) can start and then when there is consistency(two rain/week) then planting can begin.
The price of corn reduces as more farmers bring their corn to.sell at the market.
Cassava can be cultivated at any time of the year.

Latest march 15,your corn should be on the field,if you start preparation by march 15,you might not meet the right market for your corn.

If you are a poultry farmer and want to cultivate corn for the purpose of feeding your birds, you can plant at any time so far it meets your plans.

Lesgupnigeria:
A lot of farmers on this agric section keep criticizing the Minister of Agriculture that all the youth programmes are propanganda but thank God,i was able to see some witnesses that have enjoyed what the government have been doing in the agric sector.

I have said it more than once that i am not a politician or a card carrying member of any political parties but an agro-preneur and i should be able to say what i am seeing and encourage the doubting thomases..lol to key into the programmes.

I have seen improvement in the agricultural sector during this present administration than any other.

Although a lot of things are still.needed to.be done which have not been done by the federal government and things which are not to be done that are being done but i will not want to distract you by delving into all that.

I.got this SMS this afternoon from BOA:

Your BOA Greencash will soon be funded, part of this fund is not cashable. Contact NCGA for your inputs or call 0808*******, 0816******* Powered by Cellulant

Few hours later,i.got another message;

Dear YUSUF O. A You have been credited with the sum of N320000 for the NCGA Cassava Programme. .Sender:BOA, Ref:1510913300111 Date:09/Jan/2015 13:30:02.Avail Balance:NGN320000.00

About some minutes later,i.got another message;

The money you received is for Cassava Stems, Land prep, Chemicals through the NCGA, contact NCGA for an ATM card to withdraw the cash for chemical application.

Less or bias information will delay your progress, get good information.from only informed people
For youths with little or no resources to venture into agricbusiness,it will do you good to take advantage of this.
Do.not be misled, agricultural revolution is real.

Register at any agric ministry in your local govt area. and also any registered and government recognised cooperative.

I hope this help someone.
Pls how can one access this?
