The Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on prosecution, Okoi Okono Obla, has advised Nigerians against reading ethnic and religious meanings to the delayed confirmation of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

He made the remark while reacting to the controversy generated over the non-confirmation of Onnoghen as the substantive CJN.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on November 10 named Onnoghen, the most senior justice of the Supreme Court, as acting CJN, in line with recommendation by the NJC, following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed at the statutory age of 70.

Despite that Onnoghen’s tenure will expire soon, the President has been silent on his confirmation, an action that has drawn so much condemnation from a cross section of Nigerians.

A Lagos-based lawyer had earlier in the week dragged the President, his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo, the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, and the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Justice Abubakar Malami before a Lagos High Court over the non-confirmation of Onnoghen.

But reacting to the controversies generated over Onnoghen’s delayed confirmation, Obla, on Wednesday urged Nigerians not to capitalise on the situation to blackmail the President.

Stressing that the situation was common in most states of the Federation, Obla maintained that the President has done nothing wrong.

“We have an acting CJN of Nigeria.Well, if his tenure ends, the system will take care of itself. I don’t think the president has done anything wrong,” he told Vanguard.

” In Nigeria, in the judicial branch of government, we have seen this happened. In my own state, Cross River State, the Chief Judge who is the current one was appointed on acting capacity and when his tenure expired, he was again appointed on acting capacity. So, trying to blackmail the president over this is bad.

“People are trying to read ethnic meanings, religious meanings and regional meanings to this because in Nigeria, everything is being looked at from the sectional perspective, I think they are not being fair to the president.

“For goodness sake, has the president not appointed people from that very state where the Acting CJN comes from?

“Recently, the Auditor General of the Federation was appointed from that state based on merit, because he came first in the interview conducted and the president appointed him. The Chief of Naval Staff was the fifth in the Naval hierarchy but the president appointed him Chief of Naval Staff. So what are they saying?

“So, the president would respect the law, would respect the Constitution as far as the appointment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria is concerned. But people should stop reading unnecessary meanings, “he charged.

On whether Onnoghen can still be re-appointed as Acting CJN, the Presidential aide called for patience, saying, “the system will take care of itself when the Acting CJN’s tenure expires.”

” What I’m saying here is that the process will take care of itself. There wouldn’t be any vacuum, the process would take care of itself,” he said.

Well, Onoghen confirmation is being delayed because he's not Hausa/Fulani or Muslim. It's as simple as that.

Buhari knows that the probability of him winning 2019 election is very thin and her knows Justice Onnoghen's record, so he's looking for a way to install a northerner as the CJN.

It's is more disheartening that Nigeria waited for good six months only for Buhari to bring good for nothing men to destroy the little left of this country.

How on earth will a President emulate the ills at the state level and practice same at the national level?

No wonder the Naira is falling with none caring about it.

You can not send Magu's name to the NA twice for confirmation and not forward the name of the acting CJN and expect people not to think of religious or tribal sentiments,Buhari and his advisers sef! That's even if he listens to them.

Really?

The fact that this would suffice as an excuse should make it crystal clear to all that the Buhari adminstration neither came to govern or fulfill election promises.

They are opportunists who have waited in the wings (some even actively participated in the last rape of the nation) to pillage and enrich themselves.

All evidence points to this and nothing else! IMHO

Imagine if these guys met the Nation with oil at an all-time high.

Dem for lem every!

Hmm, Buhari is a useless man who thinks he is more upright than the Pope! For Christ sake if there is any security report barring you from confirming this man, what stops you from making it public? Look at the useless comment coming out from his clueless aid, he cannot even answer the simple question of why the ACJN has not been confirmed, rather he was busy chastising Nigerians for questioning the anomaly. Your incompetent principal created the avenue for people to read different types of meaning to the situation and you're here talking rubbish! It's a shame that this Buhari of a man has reduced governmance to a private business. Nothing is working in this confused and failed administration!

I believe Buhari and APC are in this plot together with 2019 in mind. Maybe Onnoghen has shown that he won't be anybody's puppet.

What evidence do we need again Nigerians.

The person we call our President is an ethnic bigot period.

If finally he's not confirmed, the likes of Obla, all the media aides of PMB ( including the ones on Nairaland) will claim that the reason Onnonghen was not confirmed was because of corruption.

They will trace $100bn to his account.

They will claim they have his call records talking with Fayose and Wike

They will drag him to court and his name will be dragged in the mud. No wonder the man has come out to say no one should fight for him, he's already scared of what will be his fate once he's not confirmed.

Then alas Buhari will appoint that Northern Judge as Chief Justice Of Nigeria

The CJN of Northern origin will be spotless, he'll have no sin. Even if he's a sinner, Buhari will forgive him and he'll be as white as snow.

I will continue to spite this government for her bias, nepotism, ethnocentrism, religious intolerance and infeasible economy policies. What do they intend to achieve with the delay? This government has no respect for democratic institutions and values.

From the onset Buhari did not want this man to be the CJN. He was looking for an excuse to bypass him and appoint a Northerner. A Source inside the presidency told me the fear of a possible backlash made the cabal to reluctantly keep him as an acting CJN, something that has never happened in the history of Nigeria. The records are there for anyone who cares to check and confirm.

Buhari is an unrepentant religious bigot. But one thing I know is that whatsoever secret agenda he has for Nigeria he will fail woefully.

Sarrki come and defend your fail fail demigod!
