If you talk about battle royales to anyone, Fortnite will probably dominate the conversation. While different games in the genre come and go, no one has created such a large- scale community as Fortnite. The juggernaut of Epic finds its way into every corner of Twitch, and even the mainstream media are flossing. Some notable battle Royales have found themselves in the spotlight, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout game mode or PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds , but nothing could hold the king's candle.

Apex Legends, a game which was recently launched by Respawn Entertainment. The game garnered 10 million players as of February 7, with a peak of one million playing at the same time. Sure that pales compared to the 200 million players and counting of Fortnite, but note that Respawn reached those numbers in just three days. Being free- to- play definitely lowers the entry barrier, but its game design can be attributed to most of the success of Apex Legends.

The game features some decisions about quality of life that improve the overall royal battle experience. Let's look at what Respawn did better than Fortnite- and by extension, most of the other Battle Royales there.

#5: Quality Ping System



You'll go through the tutorial that teaches you the basics of movement and shooting when you first launch Apex Legends. However, the game also takes its time to explain its robust ping system called Smart Comms. You'll leave a marker for your other two squadmates to see by pointing at something and hitting the ping button. However, depending on the context, these markers change. Point at a gun or item and your character will call it out, including finer details such as the armor level. Point to an enemy and warn the squad of your character.

Taking things one step further, you can use the ping button to respond to the callout of your teammates. If a teammate points out a location they want to explore, you can see and confirm their marker. You can look at the marker and call dibs when they call out an item. Holding the ping button even brings up a wheel with more detailed pings, such as "someone was here."

#4: Improved Character Dialogues



To extend beyond Smart Comms, Respawn created characters that react to the present situation automatically. Your character has host of voice lines that warn you and your two friends. For example, your character will comment on your distance from the ring when the first circle appears. What's even more impressive is that your character will even discern how many of you are in the safe zone, saying, "Heads up! Only some of us are in the ring."


These voice lines complement the genre of battle royale brilliantly, given how chaotic they can be. While you manage the loot and engage in firefights, things can get overwhelming, but your character always reminds you of the important things, such as how soon the circle begins to close. Inherently, this design decision makes your teammates vital for your survival.

Fortnite's characters, by contrast, are silent except from the PvE mode. This means you'll have to rely heavily on voice communication to stay on top of things again for a squad to succeed. If your squad's players refuse to communicate, you lose up to 75 percent of your awareness of the situation, leaving your team vulnerable but Apex Legends fix all that with automatic dialogues

#3: Introducting Character Abilities



Apex Legends takes a page with eight distinct characters from the notebook of the hero shooter. Your choice, however, goes beyond cosmetics, unlike Fortnite. These eight characters, called Legends, complement very different styles of play, and each has three types of skills: passive, tactical and ultimate.


It takes a bit of experimentation to find the character best suited to you. Do you like to be aggressive and sneaky? You can try the Wraith. Her tactical ability leaves her phase for a short time keeping you out of harm's way, and her ultimate creates two portals for anyone to use on the map.

Give Gibraltar a whirl if you like tanking. His passive protects his head when he looks down, and his tactical skill creates a dome shield for him and his teammates

While the various items and traps of Fortnite fit a similar bill, they pale compared to the level of strategy offered by Apex Legends. The Legend select screen has a strategy level to choose your character that affects the whole squad, while in Fortnite, your choice of character is literally skin- deep. Your only option when you run into someone in Fortnite is to react to whatever items they use. On the other hand, you can tell immediately when you see someone in Apex Legends what skills they have and plan for them.

#2: You Get A Second Chance



Death means game over in Fortnite, and for a new match you'll have to queue up. Your teammates can revive you in squads, but they must first secure your location. If your squad doesn't save you, you're sadly stuck spectating until the match ends, hoping your teammates can win without you.


Apex Legends gives players a little more hope. You can be revived even after you die completely, you'll have another chance to play in the match. Your banner remains active in the battlefield for 90 seconds. Your teammates can pick up the banner until the timer is complete. They can then take it to a respawn station, which essentially gives you another chance to live. You Respawn with no items , but it's better than not playing at all.


These respawn stations add another form of risk- reward judgment in Apex Legends, as some squads may choose to camp around these stations to find easy preys.

Going to a respawn station therefore puts you at a massive disadvantage, but it is sometimes your only option to reunite your entire squad and win the game overall.

#1: Kill Leaders And Champions



This is my favourite part of the game, a screen shows you the champion and his squad before each Apex Legends match begins. Killing this champion nets you extra bonus .

Former Champions are not marked on your map, so you'll have to find them like any other enenmy. However, when the Champion is killed, the in- game announcer will relay, adding insult to the injury.


Meanwhile, whoever has the most kills in every match becomes the "Kill Leader" and they also offer extra points when you kill them, much like the Champion. This could prove to be more of a challenge, of course. For a reason, after all, they're the Kill Leader. These little additions to the core gameplay loop add an extra reward to each match, giving you a goal to work towards after you gear up.

Fortnite lacks any bonuses like this. You are the same as the other 99 players who landed on the map. None of these points are worth more than the other. Apex Legends adds its own flavor to each match, creating another level of risk- to- reward gameplay that excites enemies again to hunt down
