How To Calculate The Amount Of Chemicals To Be Dissolved In A Sprayer. by OluchiDelly: 2:40am On Jul 20, 2020
One of the common agricultural practices is application of herbicides(weed killer), pesticides or/and foliar fertilizer. I have seen many crops damaged due to application of wrong dosages of chemicals, most esp the selective herbicides.

A farmer once used same quantity of a nicosulfuron(a selective herbicide for maize) he normally used for other non selective herbicides like paraquat, and he got his farm damaged. He used excess dose and the thing refused to "select" his maize plants.

The major problem associated with most crop damages is the inability of most farmers to interpreted correctly the dosage instruction on the labels. This is because most dosage instruction on many agro chemicals such as pesticides are not simplified enough for medium mechanised farmers. For example, some instructions will read "tank mix in 200L, 300L, or 400L vessel ". If you cannot afford those farm machines that use those higher volume of water, then you have to do simple conversion to your own available vessels (mostly 16L spraying tank). Some farmers have issues decoding those dosage instructions on most agro chemicals, many at times i received their calls, and I feel I should let others who may be having same issues benefit from this short information.

I will be posting 1 or 2 pics of agro chemical labels for better understanding. I will use simple arithmetics, (ratio/proportion), as most reader may not be able to relate with the scientific method that employs some jargons like molarity, molar mass etc, lol.

Watch out...

1. This dosage instruction, unlike some, is simplified and direct.

If your crop is fruit veggies, they recommend 100ml of the chemical into 100L of water.

Now let's go

100ml.....100L
Strike out equal zeros from both sides(or just divide both by 100), you have.,

1 00 ml .... 1 00 L

1ml.....1L, meaning that for a 16L capacity sprayer, you have...

16ml (of the chemical).....16L (of water)

Re: How To Calculate The Amount Of Chemicals To Be Dissolved In A Sprayer. by OluchiDelly: 4:46am On Jul 20, 2020
2. In this picture, they recommended 0.5 to 0.8 for fruity veggies. Let's pick a number within the range, 0.7L.

Right at the bottom, the manufacturer said based on one hectare, u will need to dissolve the chemical (0.7L) into 400L of clean water.
Note that the unit they gave is L, we will need to convert it to our own unit of measurement , ml, by multiplying by 1000.

Now let's go
0.7L is same as 700ml
So,
700ml (of the chemical) must be dissolved into 400L (of water), i.e
700ml..........400L
Strike out equal zeros, we have
7ml(chemical).....4L of water/sprayer

To get 16L water, we multiply d 4L by 4, and same operation must be applicsble to both sides, I.e

7ml *4....……..4L*4,
28ml(of d chemical) will dissolve in 16L(water/sprayer).

(If you wish to choose the highest range of the recommended dose which is 0.8L, u wl arrive at 8ml*4=32ml of the chemical in 16L sprayer).
Many at times, some farmers even spray as high as 100ml per sprayer of this particular brand of chemical, this is an abuse, it can cause injury yo your crops, and the consumers.

I will stop on this two examples. Questions, opinions are welcome. If you have issue with yours, you can post the pics here and let solve it together.

How about this?

How about this?

Ok. Thanks for following.
Let's briefly do the summary of the manufacturer' s instruction.

*Rate depends on soil type and weed density
* There are options of acre and hectare dosages

* soil . Acre . Hectare
Sandy. 100ml. 250ml
Loamy. 200ml. 500ml
Loamy-clayed 300ml. 750ml

Vol of water is btw 60 to 300L.
But let's take avg of about 200L
Let's also assume the land is loamy, and use hectare dosage
So,

500ml(chemica)....200L(water)
To the simple ratio, we have
5ml.............2L
To get 16L of water, we multiply the 2L by 8, same operation to 2nd side

So we

5*8……..........2*8
40ml(chemical)…......16L(water)

This is a powerful herbicide, just 40ml, unlike glyphosate and paraquat that village farmers use a milk cup(above 150ml) per knapsack.
This is what I said in my intro here about crop damage using some wrong dosage.

@ameboperoo. I perceived the herbicide is used up already, if you dont mind, can you share your experience as in what the efficacy of the herbicide is.

Thanks so much for your time.
The chemical was introduced to us to by a starch producing company. We used it on a demonstration farm but since then, I have not had time to visit the farm.
According to the company, if properly used with a contact herbicide like paraquat, as pre emergence, you may not need to weed again till harvest.
It can be used on maize or cassava farm.
The problem is the cost and availability.
It's a product of Meyers and should very powerful. But it's expensive. That's 250ml and cost about 5k.

Pre emergent herbicides are generally expensive. You can get 5 or 6 loads of knapsack from the 250ml, If the efficacy can give u a long peace of mind from weeding, I think it is worth the price.

Very worth it, I know the cost implication of weeding farms, you'll turn prayer warriors and invigilator, cause they might cut your corn or watermelon.

Also it can help people like me who don't like rainy season farming due to weed

Very often I use a helpful blog that specializes in weed killers. It's like my guide for gardening. There you can find all informations from how choose weed killer to how use it and etc.

Unless indicated on the package how to breed the weed killer, then usually one cap per liter of water. More details depending on the type of weed killer are described here.
