ALUTA THINGZ: Labour Begins Protests 13May24 Against Electricity Tariff Hike by NaijaphiliaBlog: 5:33am On May 13
Nigeria’s organised labour will on Monday 13 May 2024 start protests across the country against increase in electricity tariff and removal of power sector subsidy by the Federal Government.

On Sunday 12 May 2024, the National Treasurer of Nigeria Labour Congress, Ambali Akeem Olatunji and the National Deputy President of Trade Union Congress, Tommy Etim, both confirmed the planned protests and insisted on reversal of the tariffs to the previous rates.

It is anticipated that the protest action will result in shutting down of the Abuja headquarters of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Ministry of Power, and the state offices of power distribution companies.

BACKSTORY

On 3 April 2024, during a press briefing in Abuja, NERC announced an immediate increase in electricity tariff for Band A customers, saying those affected will pay N225 per kilowatt-hour (from the previous rate of N68) and will enjoy up to 20 hours power supply daily.

This constitutes a 231% increase, marking the removal of subsidy for customers in the Band A category, who are approximately 15% of the 12.82 million electricity consumers in Nigeria.

However, the House of Representatives, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, organised labour, Nigerian Bar Association, electricity consumers and civil society organisations, have all demanded for reversal of the tariff to the old rate.

Speaking during the Workers Day celebration in Abuja on 01 May 2024, NLC President Joe Ajaero averred that government cannot set tariffs in a sector that is already deregulated.

TUC President Festus Osifo similarly faulted the increase, saying, “It is unethical to force Nigerians to pay higher tariffs for non-existent electricity. Estimated billing is an extortion and daylight robbery against Nigerians.”

The unions thereafter issued a 1-week ultimatum, threatening to picket NERC offices if complete reversal of the tariff increase is not effected.

The ultimatum by organised labour has now expired on Sunday 12 May 2024.
