According to the National Bureau of Statistics and corroborated by the World Bank, the fastest-growing regional economy in Nigeria is the Southwest. They also have the lowest unemployment rate, which is half that of the Southeast and one-third that of the Northwest.

In addition, they have the most urban development of any zone in Nigeria, with Lagos and Ogun alone having more urban development than the entire Southeast.

The chief reason for this is their culture of respect for age and authority, which allows for political sanity in the region, and continuity from one Governor to the other, even if they are from different parties.

Have you ever seen a Southwest Governor fighting his predecessor, as happens in every other zone? It is rare. You may bring your Ambode and Tinubu, but that is an emotional argument. They did not fight until the end of Ambode'd tenure and it was a storm in a teacup that was speedily resolved.

Take the examples of Ayo Fayose and Kayode Fayemi, Abiola Ajimobi and Seyi Makinde, as well as Senator Ademola Adeleke and Rauf Aregbesola.

Each of these Governors handed over to a bitter political rival from another party. Yet, when they transferred power, there was very little or no political muscle flexing, and their successors continued their projects. And then, within a few months of their successors being in office, they reconciled and were photographed together.

And as a group, the Southwest Governors are more integrated than any other regional government. They meet regularly. Just Google 'Southwest Nigeria Governor meet' and see how many times they have met in the last four years. If you take the number of times governors of every other zone have met and combined it, it is not up to the number of times Yoruba Governors have met.

The G5 Governors were meeting because of power for themselves. The Southwest Governors meet because of progress for their people. Big difference!

Look at Ondo. The Akeredolu issue would have spiralled out of control if it occurred elsewhere, but the Southwest Governors, principally led by Makinde, who is not even from the same party as Akeredolu, met and brought the state back from the abyss.

Secessionists and local terrorists cannot try what they do in Igboland and the North in Yorubaland. Why? Because of good leadership and followership. I know you are annoyed and want to insult me. But let me ask you this question. Am I lying?

Did you not see how Makinde dealt with Yoruba nation agitators without waiting for the Federal Government? Do you not see how Amotekun fish out bandits and kidnappers more effectively than the Nigerian Police Force? Abi mo paro?

Leadership is what we learn from the Yoruba of the Southwest. The ability to work with a leader even if you do not like him. They discipline of subsuming your ego to the progress of your people. And finally, they are willing to listen to elders and traditional institutions.

And that is why what is happening in Rivers State can never occur in the Southwest, and what we see in Anambra, Abia, and Imo is unheard of among the Yoruba. The Ganduje-Kwankwaso struggle is almost impossible in the Southwest.

Philosophers say when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. But in the Southwest, elephants do not act in confrontation. They partner in cooperation. And that is what the rest of us have to learn. If not, the Southwest will keep widening the developmental gap between them and the rest of Nigeria to the extent that soon, we will prefer to japa to Yorubaland instead of Europe and America, where things are becoming increasingly difficult.
