it doesn't matter.

If you have UBA at N1 and you bought with N1 million. So u have 1M units.

Now if u sold at all 1M units @ N27 and all things being equal you now have say N27 Million

Use all N27 Million to buy @ N21, your total holding have moved from 1M units to 1.285M units.

The extra 285,714 units when sold even @ N21, gives you about N6 Million compared to the dividend of N2.3 Million (from the 1M units originally).

If you decide not to sell and want dividend next year, it will be on 1.285M units as against 1M units (original)

It's all about playing with number and LUCK.

NB,
If u no sabi set trap for rabbit, no try am o

I admire your excitement. Also good you recognize luck in the mix.

This is good if one understands it well and comfortable with numbers. It can be used even when dividend is not involved. Sell high, buy back more units at lower price, sometimes intra-day. Repeat.

Whilst I agree it's a winning strategy, it doesn't always work. Those that sold GT, Zee, etc in 2022 at less than N30 probably could not get back in for more units. Those that sold Zenith this year, cum-div, might have to wait some time too, if they can get that advantage.

Important to know your strategy, work with it but also recognize it's not fail-proof.

I like what BBMarket writes, Plan your trade, trade your plan (something like that).

The thing is, some people don't want the BE price to increase. And it's ok.

I know someone who have a BE price of #8 on UBA but refused to sell at #33 becos he doesn't want the BE to increase when he buys back.

All these things we are seeing now will pass, in my own opinion.
Somehow the banks and CBN will find a way to raise the price to the level they need in order to increase their capital to CBN recommendation.

Wow.
We'll to some, the BE is a thing of pride but for me the real business is the number of shares I hold. I am just imagining he sold at N33 and got in luckily lower at N21. That's bumper harvest

Please can someone explain this right issue concept properly? And what investors stand to gain from it?
Also, how one can take advantage of the market during the period.

As an investor, I second this motion. It's time for the baboon to also come and work with the monkey.

If I were the management of OkumuOil, I would never give in to extortion. I would beef up security, install motion sensors and cameras on the premises' perimeters. I would employ the military or paramilitary to guard the establishment. I would provide living quarters for the workers and safe transportation in and out of the company.

The community should go and establish their own farm. grin grin grin cheesy

All this does not mean the host and neighboring communities will not receive some "corporate social responsibility", but it should be a voluntary decision and not forced extortion. Kilode!! tongue

This market is tiring. You'll place a buy order at the current price yet nothing.

I want to ask, must there be a seller before your buy order can be executed or can it be traded from outstanding shares of the company

I have BE of #1 in ucap. And hence don't get bothered on price fluctuations. The last dividend of #1.8 is even above the investment made. And have collected plenty like that.
You have been lucky and that is great.it has nothing to do with dividend payments by companies..it is just simple trading of selling high and buying back low. Many oga here na thr strategy

I like your strategy and even if it might not be 100 percent on all stocks, it seems cool.

I would like to ask;

Let's assume you have 200k units of a stock at an average price of N13 and it's currently trading at N17. What will be your play if the company announces a right issue?

NB: you don't know the ratio of the issue but there has been a sell pressure on the stock in recent times pulling it from N20 to N17.

Also, how one can take advantage of the market during the period.

The concept behind rights issue is the ability to raise fresh capital from existing shareholders such that their current holdings in percentage remains same, post-rights issue. Example, 1 for 4 rights means you are entitled (have rights) to buy 1 more share for every 4 existing shares held.

Theoretically, the shareholder retains his % shareholding in the company and be able to buy new share at a "discounted price". He can also make money by trading off his rights on the stock exchange, if he doesn't want to exercise the rights.

You can take advantage of the market when rights is on by selling your current holdings at a higher price and pay for the units entitled to, since you are sure of the allotment. Example, if mkt price is N6 while rights is at N4.5. This would be true if you just want to maintain a given units of shares in the company. You can also trade-off your rights on the exchange. Occasionally, the price in the market is lower than the rights price, so an investor that wants to increase holdings would rather buy from the market and ignore the rights issue.

I am also a long termer. I only strive to increase my number of units using this luck. whenever i come out, i go back in with exact amount from the sale to increase my holding

One thing about long term investors is they don't usually have a large pool of stocks they are investing in. What happens when you apply your strategy and the price fails to come down to allow you re-enter but rather keeps going up? You would need a good dose of patience to be able to wait for a suitable re-entry point, like Oga Agba. Most people may be tempted to re-enter at some point and that will result in a smaller holding than they sold off. If the strategy has been working for you, stick to it but know that it's not fail-proof and could even be counter-productive.

My adopted strategy, in addition to dividend reinvestments is: Sell a fraction of my holdings when I perceive prices are high and buy back more when I perceive prices are lower. That way, dividend season or not, I don't entirely exit my choice stocks. If the price rises more, I don't lose out and if it falls more, I increase my holdings a bit (not as much as the person who sold off all their holdings). My approach is less risky to me but it's working fine for me. It would mean, generally, being more cash-liquid the higher prices go and more in shares the lower prices go.
