Smoke detectors are one of those amazing inventions that, because of mass production, cost practically nothing. You can get a smoke detector for as little as $7. And while they cost very little, smoke detectors save thousands of lives each year.

In fact,it is recommended that every home have one smoke detector per floor. All smoke detectors consist of two basic parts: a sensor to sense the smoke and a very loud electronic horn to wake people up. Smoke detectors can run off of a 9-volt battery or 120-volt house current.

In this article, we will examine the two most common types of smoke detectors used today: photoelectric detectors and ionization detectors. And, we'll also take a look inside an ionization detector.

Independent Fire Smoke Alarm Detector CE/RoHS Approved

The detector is suitable for detect the smoke in house, shop, hotel, restaurant, office building, school, bank, library, computer house and storehouse etc. Standalone surface mounted, easy operate, Built-in IC card, stable performance, high sensitivity Apply optical smoke test room, With buzzer, alarm independently, 9V battery, static current: ≤10uA, alarm current: ≤12mA, Low power alarm, Alarm volume: ≥85dB, Temperature range: -10~50?C, Humidity: ≤95%RH, Size: Φ107X34MM

How to Install a Hardwired Smoke Alarm Part 3

A new smoke alarm is mounted and wired in the suspended drywall ceiling for the basement living room using an old work electrical box. NM-B 14/3 cable is pulled from an existing smoke alarm to power and interconnect the new smoke detector.

Install the Old Work Electrical Box in the Drywall Ceiling

After pulling NM-B 14/3 cable along the floor joists and fastening it with insulated cable staples every 4 or 5 feet, I wedged myself into the crawlspace above the finished basement and reached out as far as I could to position the electrical box on the suspended drywall ceiling above the basement living room.

The smoke alarm must be at least 4 inches away from the walls and I?m at least 2 feet away here.I positioned the old work electrical box parallel to the metal stringers and traced the outline of the box on the drywall ceiling with an pen. The box outline is highlighted in red for better viewing. Note: Do not trace around the tabs on the ends of the old work box because the tabs must seat against the face of the drywall to so the box doesn't pull through the drywall mounting hole.

I slipped the old work electrical box in the drywall ceiling to ensure it would fit when I installed the bop from the finished side of the ceiling. It fit perfectly the first time.

Note how the four plastic tabs prevent the old work box from falling through the mounting hole: The NM-B 14/3 wires are cut so at least 6 inches extends into the box and at least 3 inch extends past the box. Only 1/2 inch of insulation is stripped from the wires ends to match the exposed wire of the Kidde PI2010 AC Quick Connect Harness.

Notice the copper ground wire is wrapped out of the way since it?s not used and there?s nothing for it to connect to on this terminating circuit. Plastic electrical boxes do not require grounding. (Metal junction boxes must be grounded with a green ground screen and ground wire pigtail.)I?ve set two flat head 8/32 thread by 3/4? long screws in the box ends to secure the smoke alarm trim plate. The old work electrical box doesn?t include these screws so you?ll have to provide your own:This detector has no wireless transmitter module, it is a standalone smoke detector fire alarm, it will NOT react or pair with your home burglar alarm system. Product Features/Benefits
It's an overused saying - better safe than sorry. Most fire deaths occur in homes lacking smoke detectors. To protect your loved ones, it is imperative that you install smoke detectors in your home.
Smoke alarms are crucial elements in the early detection of fires. Smoke and toxic fumes spread through a house faster than flames. They are especially hazardous and can cause respiratory burns, lightheadedness, nausea, confusion, and sleepiness.
Smoke inhalation is the primary cause of death for home fire victims.Smoke caused by fire is very dangerous, especially because of today`s widespread use of synthetic materials in modern homes that might generate poisonous vapours when burning. The smoke alarm detects smoke caused by smouldering at an early stage and warns by means of a loud vibrant sound thereby waking inhabitants up at a point of time when a safe escape is still possible.
About half of home fire deaths occur between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., while residents are asleep. Without a smoke alarm to wake residents and alert them to the danger, they are likely to succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning or smoke inhalation. Because families may have as little as two minutes to get out of their house once a fire starts, smoke alarms provide the warning that residents need to safely escape. The detector is suitable for detecting smoke in houses, shop, hotel, restaurant, office building, school, bank, library, computer house and storehouse etc.
The smoke alarm operates according to the scattered light principle. A light source and a photocell are arranged so as to ensure that normally no light strikes the photocell. The light source is activated in short intervals, if the concentration of smoke particles in the enclosure reaches a certain level, the light is reflected and reaches the photocell. This will set off a loud fire alarm.
PLACEMENT
. As most fires in flats starts in the living areas, it is recommended to install smoke alarms between the living and sleeping area. As a minimum requirement a smoke alarm should be installed outside every sleeping area in a flat. If there are separate sleeping area a smoke alarm is to be installed outside each sleeping area.
. The minimum requirement for a multi-story houses is to install a smoke alarm on every floor of the house and outside each sleeping area, e.g in the hallway connecting the sleeping area or on the stairway leading to this hallway. If there is a room in the attic, it is strongly recommended to install a smoke alarm on the ceiling as well.
. A smoke alarm shall be install in the sleeping area of a caravan
. For COMPLICATED OR EXTENSIVE PROPERTIES, PLEASE REQUEST QUALIFIED ADVICE FROM A SAFETY ENGINEER OR THE FIRE BRIGADE.
THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS SHALL BE AVOIDED
. Next to doors, windows, ventilators etc, where draughts can deviate smoke from the sensor
. In small or poorly ventilated garages or kitchens where waste gas or vapour may cause may cause false alarms.
. In areas where dust and dirt can interfere with the smoke alarm operation or cause false alarms
. In areas where insect are likely to trigger the alarm
. In damp or humid areas (e.g in the bathrooms)
. In rooms where the temperature may often fall below -5degree centigrade or exceed +38degree centigrade.
INSTALLATION
. Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall
. Install the battery (included) match the terminals on the end of the battery with the terminals on the unit. Match ‘’+’’ to ‘’+’’ and ‘’-‘’ to ‘’-‘’. Push the battery in until it snaps in securely and cannot be shaken loose
. Attach the smoke alarm to the mounting bracket. Turn the smoke alarm clockwise (right) until it snaps into place
. Check immediately after finishing the installation that the smoke detector works properly by pressing the test button for at least 2 seconds.
BATTERY OPERATION
The functioning of the detector is maintained even in case of power failure. On an average the battery`s (standard 9V battery) services life is 1year.
SIGNAL LAMP (LED)
A flashing small light (every 43s) signals a false free-free operation.
FULLY AUTOMATIC TEST FUNCTION
Advance electronics ensure the best possible operating readiness by means of an automatic self-test function.
BATTERY WARNING FUNCTION
By means of a warning sound repeated every 43 seconds (for up to one month), the smoke detector signalises that the power supply of the battery is insufficient and it needs to be replaced.
CONTROL BUTTON
Temporarily increases the detector`s sensitivity to test the alarm function
NOISY (85dBA) PIEZOELECTRIC WARNING SOUND
Vibrant warning sound in case of fire alarm-high frequency
NOTE: This device does not contain any radioactive substances!
TESTING THE ALARM
A flashing LED signals accurate operation. A loud vibrating sound occurs in case of smoke alarm, a short whistling tone occurs every 30 to 40 seconds for up to one month signalling that the battery needs to be replaced.
Test the smoke alarm weekly for your security by pressing the respective button (for at least 2 seconds) until you hear the alarm.
FEATURES:
Stand alone surface mounted, easy operate, Built-in IC card, stable performance, high sensitivity Apply optical smoke test room, With buzzer, alarm independently, 9V battery, static current: ≤10uA, alarm current: ≤12mA, Low power alarm, Alarm volume: ≥85dB, Temperature range: -10~50?C, Humidity: ≤95%RH, Size: Φ107X34MM.
It is easy to mount on your ceiling or prefered position,
FALSE ALARMS
After every alarm, check if the there is a fire. In case of false alarm do not remove the battery but fan the air around the smoke alarm until the alarm turns off, (if necessary vacuum the outside cover) after the alarm the device is immediately ready for operation.
