Hey PetLanders, I'm yet to have a dog of my own but I gotta share this with you guys as it might be very much useful to some people.
I greet my bosses like JohnSainty, aywhy93 , ImFortress, Prodegree, johnnyn1, Faccouk, Mercy348 , oluomoadebayo, lifeofpolice1 etc

Many dogs are natural guard dogs but bringing out the habit of guarding requires much or lesser trainings.
It should be noted that teaching a dog to be a guard dog in an aggressive manner would surely backfire as the dog would one day go again its Lord so I advise that you train your dog with proper strategies which should start as early as when the dog is 8months old that's if your dog is a pup and if possible you dog ain't a you just have to also do it rightfully to make the dog comprehend faster than expected.

Do you know that; not socialising a dog doesn't guarantee it being a good guard dog instead it makes the dog aggressive to anyone it sees by attacking them even when not necessary and this would even piss you that is the owner of the dog... Though I am yet to get a dog but I know a little about dogs and the little I know I make sure I know it too well. I've often seen PetLanders saying Chaining and lockingup a dog often would make it a good guard dog aggressive. No! This is totally Wrong a guard dog shouldn't be aggressive instead it should be able to work with calculations and good strategies depending on the way you train it so I don't advise that you regularly chain or lockup your dog and on the other hand I'm not forcing that you socialise your dog but it should be done with proper moderation.

Steps
Socialize your dog
Does this sound weird to you? I know some of my bosses would come in to try prove me wrong but I tell you that socializing your dog is one of the key to build a good guard.
On this, try as much as possible to take your dog on walks and make sure it socialises with quite a number of people which should be done with moderation so as to understand people and be able to read them. By doing this, you should as try as much as possible to make sure your dog doesn't witness negative events as this might lead to the dog being fearful and when a dog is shy and fearful it tends to bite and bark irrelevantly from fear and might act lazy when confronted as it might run away when needed to guard due to fear.

Enroll your Dog in Obedience Class
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?? This is a very nice way forward.
Teaching your future guard dog how to be obedient is a master key in case you don't know but now you know grin
Teach your dog basic obedience and make sure you're in charge, your dog shouldn't be in control but you. When ever you say go, sit, catch, it should be able to comprehend and do what you've commanded it to do so as making it obedient... In this case, when you tell the dog to attack or catch is should be able to know how to do so and on what occasion to do so... By doing this you should also Reward them whenever they hearken to instructions and commands rather than whipping and punishing them for mistakes... Your dog should be treated with care mehn, that's why I love PetLanders they don't joke with their pets most especially dogs grin
This also fulfil dogs needs to work and their total responsibility towards their environment

Noting
Teach your dog to stop doing things on your command, this can also be similar to making them obedient but with slight difference.
You should be Able to command your dog to stop barking most especially when you enters with a visitor and being a guard dog this would make them note that they've done the wrong thing and probably won't repeat such when next you come in with a visitor cos they've known that you don't like it though most dogs might bark because they are happy seeing but this command would make them know when and when not to bark, if your dog do not learn this they might end up become a nuisance to your territory by barking at Any person or thing they see and tag it as normal and would be hard to rectify or even moderate... You can do this by just telling your dog Shuuh! OR Enough OR Hey! OR Quiet And putting your second finger beside the thumb in the center of your lips. I did this for the local breed in met In my new compound and he knows when to bark when i am and when I'm not around even though I'm not its owner
This is as simple as you think grin

Building Alertness
Make your dog's Alertness very high by playing some pranks. You can plant a stranger to act weird as if he's coming to do something bad in your house, this would make the dog confuse and in such a way Increase it's Alertness.
while the dog is chained or caged, the stranger should be made to tiptoe or pass strangely in front of the dog and even scare the dog, this would piss the dog and eben try to lose break to attack the intruder but make sure the stranger is wearing safety gadgets incase the dog get losed grin I can't believe I'm writing this 3:24AM, I'm loving this grin

I think you should lock up most times and socialize once in a while. Although I think behaviours in dogs are similar to that of human, some dogs are naturally aggressive and cannot be changed. How I train my dogs>>>>>>>>
From puppy stage, That's if I want my dog to be protective... I don't socialize at young age that's puppy age. I'll keep my dog in door starting from Age 1 month till 6 months, I can then socialize once in a while.

Training the pup how to heed to my commands... I start as early as 1month of age. Stop it! Come here! And dogs hear stop it more than any other commands. I teach him the basics of training and my pups grabs the commands as early as 2 months. I'm not a dog beater o but I give it a little tap at the bottom for warning if it's doing something I don't like. Believe me I pet my dog %90 And little tapping %10. grin

There some kinds of dog that are good for controllable guard dog, unless you want your dog to kill someone on your neck. Dogs like GSD are good for such security. Dogs like rott are killers o before you come out them don kill for your neck. But GSD can cling it's teeth to the victims leg and wait for the boss to come out for final judgement, na why na him police they use pass. Men I love GSD. smiley

Protection dog is all about genetics but training will take the dog to another level. You need to socialize your dog at the early stage in order to make him strong and clear headed. Most so called guard dogs in Nigeria will run under serious threats. Every dog must be socialized irrespective of the purpose.
