Senate Considers Federal Takeover Of State Airports And Refund Request (video) by Reelpawa: 10:51am On May 16
President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to approve the federal government's takeover of two state airports and the refund of N24.6 billion to the states involved. The letter, read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswil Akpabio, outlines the reimbursement plan for Lafia Cargo Airport in Nasarawa State (N9.5 billion) and Kebbi State International Airport (N15.1 billion) through a promissory note.

The takeover, initially sanctioned by the previous administration in July 2022, encompasses the Lafia Cargo Airport and Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Birnin-Kebbi. The Senate, however, has referred this request to its committee on Local and Foreign Debts for further review and evaluation. The committee is expected to scrutinize the proposal and present its findings to the Senate in due course.

This move signals a significant step in federal-state relations concerning infrastructure development and financial responsibilities within Nigeria. It underscores the importance of proper oversight and deliberation in matters of national interest.
