Amid the ongoing hardship ravaging Nigeria, deposit money banks in the country will now start charging 0.5% cybersecurity levy on transactions.

This was contained in a circular dated May 6, 2024 by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to all commercial, merchant, non-interest and payment service banks as well as mobile money operators and payment service providers.

“Following the enactment of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) (amendment) Act 2024 and pursuant to the provision of Section 44 (2) (a) of the Act, ‘a levy of 0.5% (0.005) equivalent to a half percent of all electronic transactions value by the business specified in the Second Schedule of the Act’, is to be remitted to the National Cybersecurity Fund (NCF), which shall be administered by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA),” the circular partly read.

The apex bank said that the implementation of the levy would start two weeks from the date of the circular.

“The levy shall be applied at the point of electronic transfer origination, then deducted and remitted by the financial institution. The deducted amount shall be reflected in the customer’s account with the narration, ‘Cybersecurity Levy’.”

People will go back to safekeeping money by burying it. Imagine 0.5% of 5 million. That’s 25k for cybersecurity alone

Kuda, FairMoney, Opay, SmartCash are here to stay. With zero fee transfer when receiving and sending. Something that commercial banks can never do.

It's because most of those Fintech banks don't have future. Some of the services they are providing are not just something feasible for normal banks to do

That's the result of allowing a govt that only knows how to tax you snatch power. It is cyber spaces they want to secure after leaving the physical spaces in undeniable mess.
0.5% to secure servers they don't control. Extremely foolish.

Is no one going to stop all these frivolous bank charges?

If you can’t secure your network just get out of the banking business

Tor, we all are in this together. For those that think they are immuned, every business will do what businesses does to production cost, which is to transfer the cost to the final consumer. So expect price of services and goods to adjust accordingly.

The only economic strategy Tinubu knows is how to tax people effectively and how to raise taxes on something the govt invested nothing in. Up till today exporting agric produce out of Nigeria is a complete mess, growing crop in Nigeria is a complete mess, Nigeria customs till today are the ones responsible for 70%of the inflation in Nigeria because of their voodoo levies - no transparent dealing where the public can know the cost of importation for categories of goods. Nothing nothing nothing! And yet Tinubu thinks investors are coming? I don't understand black people

I love it, they are teaching Igbos bitter lessons, unfortunately, this version of bitter lesson is for only people that have money to eat.

One of them was arguing that Chelsea seaman sachet drink is a better cleaning agent for wound than methylated spirit in front of a hospital. These are the humanoid tissues we said were sophisticated.

It made me remember one cultist prof during the elections and now.

Wait o.

1. Electronic transfer levy.
2. 35 naira per transaction after 3 withdrawals in a month. (Remember that all banks have programmed their ATMs to dispense only 10,000 naira max. So if you need more, you have no choice than to collect the 35 naira charge)
3. Card Maintenance
4. SMS charges

Now this grin

Businesses are now going to factor these charges in their prices.
You already know what that means

You will heal.

My research was actually specific about Opay.. They have a blinking future. The traditional banks had their reasons for not just opening branches or having agents anyhow, it's the staff that will run the business down eventually because of scam and fraud.

Think on that, no more hints

This boy is an idiot. In the UK, nobody has time to queue in bank halls anymore. Banking is advancing fast.

It seems this administration is against cashless policy. With this nonsense policy don't expect young people in your banking halls anymore.

This automatically means that for every alert you receive the government has earned 0.5% of it. If you have 200,000 in your account just know that 1,000 naira of that money is no longer yours.

The man is a genius, he is a master strategist..he increased Lagos IGR...to what end? You are killing businesses, pushing more people into poverty, discouraging cashless policy, etc. Tomorrow they will boast of actualizing 20 trillion from cyber security levy and some dummies will clap for them. These things haven't made life easy for the masses instead it is the reverse
