- The Lebanese government has evacuated 140 of its nationals from Nigeria on Sunday amid the coronavirus pandemic
- The Lebanese nationals were flown out of the country, through the Lagos airport, after going through screening
- The Nigerian government is also making plans to evacuate its citizens in other countries who have indicated willingness to return home amid the pandemic
As Nigeria's coronavirus cases rise above 200, the
Lebanese government has evacuated a batch of
140 nationals from the country via the Murtala
Muhammad International Airport in Lagos on
Sunday, April 5. According to Business Day newspaper, the
Lebanese nationals were flown out of the country
after going through screening.
Legit.ng gathers that the aircraft which flew into the country under humanitarian operations
departed in the evening of Sunday.
In a related development, a chartered Air France
flight evacuated 260 European citizens from Nigeria and additional 118 European citizens from other
West African countries through the Murtala
Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on
Thursday, March 26.
Also, Legit.ng earlier reported that some Nigerian
citizens who are stranded in Glasgow, Scotland
have cried out to the federal government for help. The stranded citizens said they want to return
home to Nigeria amid the coronavirus outbreak
which has brought the world to its knees. One of the Nigerians, a student, tweeted the
group's Save-Our-Soul message to the chairman of
Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike
Dabiri-Erewa. Dabiri-Erewa replied to the tweet, expressing the
willingness of the government to bring home the
stranded Nigerians if they meet NIDCOM's
requirements at such a critical time.
The NIDCOM boss also explained in another report
that the Nigerian missions in other countries had
been instructed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to
compile lists of nationals who have indicated interest to return home.
This directive from the ministry was revealed on
Friday, April 3, by Dabiri-Erewa who said that the
move became necessary after Nigerians stranded
abroad made a request to this effect following the
spread of coronavirus. However, she made it clear that the financial
implications will be borne by the prospective
evacuees, adding that they must be quarantined
upon their return.
