UPDATE: Governor of Lagos State, Mr Jide Sanwo-olu today visited the GAC Car Assembly Plant at Ogba, WEMCO Road Lagos. Recall that Mr Governor unveiled the New Taxi Scheme called “LAG RIDE” on 4th March 2021, where he announced the plan for the Car Assembly Plant.

The Vehicle Assembly Plant in Lagos was part of the bilateral agreements reached by the State Government and Chinese Investors’ Community in November 2019 during Governor @jidesanwoolu’s business trip to China.

Facilities already in place in the Plant include wheel balancing chamber, spraying booths, maintenance hall, noise testing chambers, sprinkling arena to test for roof leakage, staff lounge and auto parts warehouse.

Governor @jidesanwoolu said the automobile assembly plant would create employment opportunities for local skilled workers, as 95 per cent of the workforce would be sourced locally.

Some of the parts used in the assembly plant would be sourced locally, including air conditioning system, valves, ball joints, bolts and nuts, and batteries.

The plant is expected to produce 5,000 units of new vehicles when it becomes operational.

IBILE Holdings Limited, a State-owned corporation, is supervising the investment on behalf of the Lagos State Government.

This Assembly Plant, was a six-bay warehouse, on a land size of 39,000sqm, which belonged to @lsdpcofficial. It was relinquished for the Plant as part of the inter-agency cooperation in the State in support of its socio-economic development.

LAGRIDE KICKS OFF WITH DELIVERY OF 1,000 GAC MOTOR VEHICLES TO LAGOS
The Lagos State Government launched an e-hailing taxi service with 1,000 brand new GAC MOTOR vehicles.

Lagos, Mar 23, 2022 – A delivery of 1,000 GAC MOTOR vehicles to the Lagos State Government kicked off "LAGRIDE," the state's newest ride-hailing taxi scheme. The initiative will provide a safer and more comfortable mobility option to residents.

Distinguished guests at the rollout ceremony included Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor; Cui Jianchun, Ambassador of China to Nigeria; Jin Mingyu, Chinese Deputy Consul General in Lagos, and Diana Chan, Chairman of CIG Motor.

Two-Year Effort Brought to Fruition

LAGRIDE aims to provide a reliable means of travel at an affordable rate. Plans began in November 2019 when Governor Sanwo-Olu visited Guangdong Province, headquarter of GAC MOTOR.

The GS3 SUV and the GA4 sedan‘s proven quality, spacious cabin, and intelligent technology are expected to improve the quality and safety on Lagos roads.

Two years after its initial conception, 1000 GAC vehicles set sail from Qingdao, China, in October 2021 and arrived in Lagos four months later. The blue-and-white fleet cruised over Nigeria's Third Mainland Bridge in one of the largest road-shows in the country.LAGRIDE is a key opportunity to strengthen GAC MOTOR's brand reputation in Nigeria by making a positive local impact. Technologically, GAC MOTOR assists the development of Nigeria's transportation sector. Economically, the scheme encourages vehicle purchase and promotes employment, aiding overall economic growth.

Yu Jun, Member of the Executive Committee & Director of International Business Unit of GAC Group & Chairman of GAC MOTOR International, expressed that LAGRIDE is a top priority for GAC Group and strongly supported by both Guangdong and Lagos governments. The project's successful launch came after overcoming two years of the recurring pandemic, chip shortage, and shipping delays. Despite unfavorable circumstances, GAC MOTOR retained the spirit of craftsmanship, bringing quality transportation services to Nigeria. The brand is now an important driving force in developing the local e-hailing sector.

Commitment to the Spirit of Craftsmanship

GAC MOTOR maintains a strong presence in Nigeria. In 2021, GAC MOTOR won the country's prestigious "Automobile Company of the Year" award. After years of cultivation, the Nigerian market has recognized GAC MOTOR as representative of Chinese craftsmanship. GAC MOTOR continues to uphold the spirit of craftsmanship and the pursuit of quality, aiming to create an enjoyable life of mobility for global users

Great initiative becoming reality.

More jobs for all Nigerians in Lagos.

Obi with better policies than Tinubu?

You've got jokes.

What policies did Obi implement in Anambra besides putting state funds in Fidelity Bank that he was the previous Chairman?

Except we are blind or mentally handicapped, Peter Obi cannot unlace Tinubu's shoes.

At this century, especially in Lagos, e-hailing business interference is one of the dumbest initiative a government should venture into.

This state is already over congested. Sanwo Olu is overcongesting with with this myopic idea but the sycophants are blind to see and know what is right for them. Whatever the govt does for them is good and fine.

Lagos govt should look inwards to reduce the population of vehicles on the road and focus on developing other means of transport as seen in other even developing countries. If he needs ideas on this, let him reach out.

Dear Nigerians, let's not trade the future of our children and coming generations for crumbs from table that these politicians are giving us. Our parents have already failed our generation by decisions made based on ethnicity, religion, nepotism and ignorance. We can't afford to do same to our own children, let's vote with our sense.

When will he visit schools where every Lagos child is enrolled with the thousands of classrooms built and thousands of teachers he has employed since 2019 and his progressive predecessors since 1999 with the huge allocation when oil was $140, humongous IGR, loans etc?

http://thestreetjournal.org/2021/02/oyo-orders-5000-newly-recruited-teachers-to-resume-duty/

The Oyo State Government said on Tuesday that it had commenced the process of distribution of appointment letters to the 5,000 newly recruited teachers under the state Teaching Service Commission.
The Chairman, Oyo State Teaching Service Commission, Pastor Akinade Alamu, who made the disclosure in Ibadan, the state capital, said that the newly recruited teachers are to resume to their duty posts immediately.
The Street Journal gathered that the distribution of letters of appointment to successful newly recruited teachers started on Monday.
Alamu said that their appointment was sequel to a long period of scrutiny and verification during which errors that might have crept in during and after the examination and oral test for the exercise had been corrected.
According to him, the state government approved the release of 5,000 appointment letters for distribution of which a total of 4,400 letters had been released by TESCOM while the remaining letters were withheld due to errors on the part of the applicants. The errors, he said, included misspelt names as well as invalid email addresses among others.
However, he assured those who had yet to receive their appointment letters that it would be ready for collection immediately after the errors have been corrected by the applicants.

Alamu added that the letters were sent to the centralised centres in the 33 local government areas of the state for collection in order to avoid overcrowding and in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols. He, therefore, implored the successful candidates to resume duties immediately considering the fact that the academic session has commenced. The TESCOM Chairman said, “While congratulating the successful applicants, we want to appeal to those who are yet to get their letters to exercise patience.
We discovered that 600 among the letters have errors that need to be rectified. That is already being sorted and corrected as we speak and will be distributed as well.”

The Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs Olabisi Oderinde, who congratulated the selected candidates on their appointment, urged them to show high sense of diligence, “As this will be the way to bring the governor’s passion for education to reality.” The zonal heads of TESCOM lauded the current administration in the state for what they called positive responses on education policies of the state. They pledged their support towards the educational development of the state. In their response, the newly recruited teachers, comprising indigenes of the state and non-indigenes, expressed their readiness to work optimally in line with the set goals of the state government.

Governor Makinde granted approval for the appointment of the successful candidates last year having scaled through the tests.
Among the 5,000 successful candidates, 91 per cent are Oyo State indigenes while nine per cent are non-indigenes.
The TESCOM chairman had indicated in earlier interview with journalists that among the 300 physically challenged applicants, 150 would be employed directly for teaching job while the remaining 50 would get non- teaching positions.

Interesting facts about Addis Ababa and Lagos light rail projects.

Addis Ababa / Lagos
Cost == $475Million / $1.2Billion
Length == 34km / 27km
Time to Complete == 4years / 7years (projected)
Year Awarded == 2011 / 2008 (Construction began 2010)
Contractor == China Railway Eng. Corp (CREC) /Chinese Civil Eng. Constr. Coy (CCECC)
Population == 5Million / 20Million

Ethiopia has managed to deliver Sub-Saharan Africa’s first modern light rail project which opened in the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday, and in the process, beat Lagos whose own rail project remains four years behind schedule.

Ethiopia’s rail project was delivered on time, despite its being longer than the Lagos – Badagry rail line currently under construction.

Addis Ababa’s two line 34-kilometre system was built by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) and cost $475m, 85 percent of which has been covered by China’s Exim bank. The Lagos Light Rail Project or Blue on Badagry Expressway, was to have 13 stations from Okokomaiko to Marina via Iddo for a total of 27 kilometres.

The contract was awarded to the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) at the cost of $1.2 billion in 2008, and was to be delivered in 2011. Survey work took one year between August 2009 and August 2010 while construction began July 2010.

The work is being implemented using the public and private partnership (PPP) model, whereby the state builds the infrastructure and the private sector provides the rolling stock and management. However, the project has not worked out according to the plan.
The 2011 deadline was missed, even though the State government got a loan to fund the project.

Splashme:
The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.

Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.

The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.

Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”

The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.

Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.

He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”
