In a heartwarming gesture, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Tunji Disu, recently paid a visit to 94-year-old DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (Rtd), a pioneering female police officer who made history as one of the first twenty women to join the force in 1955. This remarkable act of kindness has been widely praised, marking the first time a senior officer has visited this trailblazing veteran.

DCP Okuyiga's story is one of unwavering dedication, courage, and integrity. Born in 1929, she joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1955, at a time when women were rarely seen in law enforcement. Despite the challenges and gender biases she faced, she rose through the ranks, earning the respect of her colleagues and the admiration of her community.

Her distinguished career was marked by numerous achievements, including her role in establishing the Women's Branch of the Nigerian Police Force. However, her unwavering commitment to upholding the law would ultimately lead to her forced retirement.

In the early 1970s, DCP Okuyiga arrested a serving judge who had broken traffic laws. Despite the judge's attempts to use his position to intimidate her, she insisted that he must be prosecuted. Her stance sparked a chain reaction of events that would test her courage and resolve.

The then-Supreme Military Council, led by General Olusegun Obasanjo, intervened in the matter, threatening her with dismissal. But DCP Okuyiga refused to back down, even when faced with the possibility of losing her job and her reputation. Her unwavering commitment to justice and her unshakeable integrity earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and the public.

When the SMC decided to dismiss her without benefits, the then-Inspector General of Police, Adamu Suleiman, intervened, pleading her case and ensuring that she was asked to resign instead, preserving her meritorious service.

Despite her forced retirement, DCP Okuyiga's legacy continued to inspire generations of police officers, particularly women, who saw her as a role model and a symbol of courage and determination.

CP Tunji Disu's visit to DCP Okuyiga is a testament to her enduring legacy and a reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of our nation's heroes. It's astonishing that this extraordinary woman, who embodies the values of valour and strength, has not received national recognition or honours for her selfless service.

Let us honour DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (Rtd) for her unwavering commitment to justice, her unshakeable integrity, and her inspiring legacy. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us that courage, determination, and a commitment to doing what is right can overcome even the greatest challenges.
