Since you are use to Java , I believe it will be easier for you to use JSP (Java Server Pages) since it belongs to same family (Java) . Ben

PHP was built for the web from ground up and if over 70% of all the dynamic websites out there run on PHP then it makes perfect sense to believe that PHP is best for the web even though it is gradually being used to develop desktop applications.

If your plan for web development is to connect to an EIS and do some few SQL query for your frontend and a good presentation layer, then PHP will do just fine. My opinion.

We have what we called middleware software. PHP will be a good solution for that in correlation to web development. On the other hand if you are planning for ES (Enterprise Systems) like SAP, Java would be my recommendation. You would need to learn J2EE though. Learning JSP is not enough for J2EE.

J2EE has about this list of technologies to learn:

1. Java
2. JSP
3. Servlet
4. JSF
5. XML
6. JavaBean
7. JDBC
8. HTML
9. Javascript
10. CSS
11. SOAP
12. JavaMail
13. Java Message Service
14. EJB
15. JCA
16. JavaIDL
17. Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI)
18. Java RMI/IIOP
19. Java Transaction Services (JTS) and Java Transaction API (JTA)

All these for developing Enterprise Web Application and related Web applicatopm
Thanks for your advice sbucareer I think I will go for java since I already have foundation experience with enterprise application
On a Second thought I think I will learn both because with that I have an added advantage
