Yep. POP is a type of suspended ceiling. All POP ceilings are suspended ceilings but not all suspended ceilings are POP.

A suspended ceiling as the name implies are secondary ceilings below the actual structural ceiling.

I will use images to illustrate the difference.

POP (Plaster of Paris)

It is casted as the name implies with Plaster of Paris. It is mostly used because it is relatively easy to cast into various decorative forms.

Suspended Ceiling

This is usually made up of tiles that are fixed into a frame that "suspended" from the actual ceiling.

Very correct.

@ Post,

In addition to the response from 'Redfly', please kindly see below my definition and comments drawn from expert judgment driven by experience:

A. Suspended Ceilings:
A form of ceiling installed between the soffit of the structural slab/element above a space and the floor of the referred space. Suspended ceilings allow for a void space between the soffit of the structural slab and the new suspended ceiling. The void space is usually used or serves as a Service zone to duct or hide Electrical, HVAC and seldom piped/plumbing services. Suspended ceilings are usually anchored on the sides to the perimeter wall at a suitable level above the floor known as the headroom and with vertical suspenders from the slab or element above.

The headroom may differ in accordance with the proposed use of the space whilst the Service void may also differ based on the characteristics of the proposed Services. Usually, it is best practice to coordinate the structural floor to floor height, target effective headroom and required service void height during design development before commencement of construction for efficiency and suitable quality.

Suspended ceilings vary in nature and range from skimmed plaster boards (POP), aesthetic timber strips, PVC strips, modular acoustic ceiling boards with grids, etc. The latter is often used in commercial buildings whilst the other aforementioned types are predominantly used in residential buildings. Notwithstanding, the choice and type of suspended ceiling may vary with the culture and preference of the end user or client. A composite of the various types may also be implemented for desired results.

Advantages of suspended ceilings are the flexibility to manage and maintain Services housed within its void; 2. aesthetic appeal; acoustic control; additional fire protection. The disadvantages of suspended ceilings are 1. its cost intensive nature - it increases the structural wall height because of the need to meet a suitable headroom after the suspended floor; additional cost incurred to procure and install the boards. 2. If poorly done, it may debase the general outlook of the space.

B. POP Ceiling:
POP is an acronym for 'Plaster of Paris'. In construction, and when used with ceilings, it refers to a suspended system made from a combination of gypsum plaster boards (e.g 4 feet x 8 feet)joined with light gauge mesh and skimmed with a flurry screed made from a mix of bagged gypsum plaster powder and water. POP Ceilings are usually dressed with specially moulded cornices and center roses when used in residential buildings. They are best known for the aesthetic appeal and flexibility with recesses and different levels. POP Ceilings are usually finished with application of paints of the client's colour choice. White paints are the most predominant choice when POP Ceilings are used. The same systems are used for partitions and vertical elements but may not require suspension to an existing surface but anchorage where required.

Technically one might say that there is no distinct difference between a POP ceiling and Suspended ceiling as almost every POP ceiling is Suspended ceiling.
But for the sake of this topic, a POP ceiling is a type of decorative ceiling made by molding POP(Plaster of Paris) or Gypsum powder into various shapes and designs and installed either by hanging(gashing) it to wooden nogging, gashing it to the concrete decking or plastering(screeding) it directly to an already plastered decking surface. #(Click on my Signature for samples of POP ceiling).
A Suspended ceiling on the other hand is a kind of ceiling made by installing(droping) ceiling tiles (which come either in 2X2ft or 2X4ft sizes) on a T-shaped metal Grids already suspended with galvanized wires to the wooden nogging or concrete deck. Example of a suspendend ceiling are those square shaped ceilings you see in Banks. See picture below....

Ire007: Hello guys.

Can someone explain the differences between POP and suspended ceilings aside the cost?

Thank you.
POP is just a material that can serve in place of asbestos ceiling sheets for a more acoustic balance. Suspended ceiling is a method of constructing a ceiling in such a way as to create some reasonable space between the ceiling coverings and roof framework+roofing sheets for mainly piping e.t.c. The suspended ceiling is where you fix your pop or asbestos ceiling.

POP is a form of "Suspended Ceiling"
Suspended ceilings are the ceilings above your head right now that is not a concrete deck. "Decking"
So asbestos ceiling, ceiling board ceiling, pop ceiling, gypsum board ceilings e.t.c are all suspended ceilings.

The term is derived from the construction of the ceilings in that they are suspended by attaching them to the roof members or the concrete deck above them. They don't have supports on the ground. Kapish!?

But wait...! the technical term for the concrete deck which suspended ceilings are attached to is a "Suspended Floor" this is to differentiate it from the Ground Floor which is supported by the ground and not suspended on columns and beams.

POP is NOT Flammable! It is flame retardant. Th flammability of the suspended ceiling depends on the material used to make it.

pop is more beautiful than suspended ceiling because u can achieve diff. Beautiful Designs with it and you can creat ur own designs, On like suspended ceiling that looks monotonous.

Pop is also better thatn suspended ceiling because it doesn't burn instantly incase of any fire out break.on like suspended ceiling that. Will burn faster.

POP simply means plaster of paris, its a type of ceiling that originated from france.it involve the use of a white powder (calcium trioxo carbonate) for moulding the ceiling into any form or pattern.while suspended ceiling involves the use of synthetic material that comes in form of 300x300mm,or a long strip of plastic material that is usually cut into seize and assembled by interlocking each strip to cover a room.the type that when you look from below you would see a square pattern all through the ceiling.it is called suspended ceiling because it is attached to the roofing rafters and suspended below the roofing rafters (arc austyn)

POP simply means Plaster of Paris which can obtain by mixing a white cement together with water and yarn material to give it strength. This is commonly used to beautify sitting room in residential houses.

while suspended ceiling is board like material used with aluminum profile, this is common used by banks (Banking hall) etc
