Sir Alex Ferguson has been accused of lying over Wayne Rooney's mystery illness.


The Manchester United striker has been ruled out of the opening matches of the new season with a virus that Ferguson claimed had been contracted during the club's brief trip to Nigeria two weeks ago.


"It's a virus he's picked up in Nigeria, I believe, and it's not a nice one," Ferguson told reporters on Tuesday.


But Ferguson's comments have sparked outrage in the country, with Bassey Ndem, an organiser of the tour, telling The Sun: "They did not catch it in Nigeria.


"It's a lie from the pit of hell and it's sad someone had to go to that length to degrade Nigeria. Rooney only sat in his hotel room. He was in Nigeria for less than 24 hours."

United have yet to release any details about Rooney's illness, other than insisting the forward was suffering from malaria.

In his press conference, Ferguson claimed that the only medication the United party took before the trip were anti-malaria tablets, although it has since been reported that they were also given injections for yellow fever and hepatitis

Nigeria is a failed nation that's probably why anything negative is associated with it.
How can you now blame Ferguson even if he was lying?

No one can "prove" it because we were not there BUT the story does have some serious pot holes.

1. Ferguson said "It's a virus he's picked up in Nigeria, I believe, and it's not a nice one". . . "I believe" is not a word that portrays certainty.
2. Why are they not releasing the "details" of his illness? they're simply calling it "a virus from Nigeria"

Even when we were kids, we knew that Europeans were susceptible to localized African diseases. And vice versa. What part of that elementary education did you guys miss?

The Nigerian guy talking about Rooney not staying in Nigeria for more than 24 hours should return his degree ASAP. it takes only 30 seconds for a mosquito to bite you and transfer the malaria parasite. Perhaps in his village Mosquitoes bite in and hang on for 2 days before you can get the disease abi?

I look back at the days when paranoia and inferiority complex was not so rife on Nairaland.

Five new patients were identified with mild cases and were treated aboard the USS Iowa Jima rather than evacuated out of the region, officials said.

Navy doctors are investigating what they say is an unusually high rate of the illness among service members who were in Liberia only briefly last month on a peacekeeping mission, then returned to a three-ship amphibious group offshore.

[b]The 51 sickened represent almost a fourth of some 225 who went ashore to help West African peacekeepers last month. [/b]They include an Army soldier, three sailors and one civilian, with the rest Marines.

Were you to be a well-read person, you'd know about the thousands of Native americans and Incans that lost their lives to smallpox from Europe. You'd know the terrible toll diseases can take on people with little natural immunity.
