Pre-order...a NO-NO? by bimbor(op): 7:44am On Jul 16, 2014
I have sat down to critically analyse this topic and I have come with a few submissions. After personally viewing the stormy sessions that have been making rounds in the Autos section for a few weeks now I have decided to let out a few words to the public. I will be brief and concise and try not to waste words.

First off, about my contribution on @Betalyf's thread, I know a few people were against my post and even went as far as labelling me an accomplice with Inspired . Let me make it clear that I'm only a customer like every other person here who also committed some funds to pre-order a car with Inspired Autos. I'm in no way related to Mr Inspired. Inspired is a car dealer while I'm a Medical Doctor by profession so those trying to connect the dots should not bother. My post on Betalyf's thread was as a result of the numerous antagonistic views I observed on the thread and saw I just felt we should give inspired a break at least let him handle Betalyf's request before crucifying him. I'm in no way supporting what Mr Inspired did but then I saw that if that thread continues like that with a geometric rise in malicious comments, we may not only end up taking food from Mr Inspired's table, but we may end up destroying the table altogether and maybe just maybe, his reputation on Nairaland may go in the way of one dealer I know on this forum (Name withheld)., hence my intercessions.

With that said, Let me address the subject matter. This issue of pre-order seems to be generating too many controversies in this section. So I think the pre-order deal should be left solely to Dealers who have the financial strength as bulk purchasers and who have access or agents abroad that can physically inspect their cars to their taste before buying. Beleive me, no matter how astute a dealer is at spotting great cars, his tastes might not meet your expectations. Like the saying, "Different strokes". Let the dealers buy their cars abroad, pay for them in full and ship to Nigeria with their own funds and then clear these cars with their own resources as well. Then any prospective buyer can walk into their showrooms across Lagos or elsewhere to see the cars of their choices, Look up the History of such cars using the VIN. Do a test drive and then pay for such cars if satisfied. You will all agree with me that this whole process will only last a few hours or maybe a day or two as opposed to Pre-order deals that lasts for months before fulfilment.

This method will eliminate a lot of problems in the long run. Pre-order has a lot of issues too many to discuss and at the end of the day it's really not worth the sweats. I don't think we need to suffer this much to drive a car really. Waiting for 4 months to take delivery of a car is just too much to handle, coupled with some other stories like: Car is waiting to clear US Customs, Car is yet to clear US Customs, it will clear customs next week, The location where car was bought is too far from port, There is delay in loading onto vessel, Vessel has not sailed, Vessel will sail latest by next week, And after vessel sails and getting to Nigeria, you begin to hear other grammers like 'There is congestion at Port', 10 other vessels are on the queue waiting to discahrge ahead of yours, Nigerian Customs are planning to increase duty rates and so on and so forth....These stories are a pain in the butt for a buyer who just wants to buy a single car and drive. All these automobile algorithms should be left to car dealers who buy in bulk.

So my candid advice is that pre-order should be discouraged totally for all cars except the rare brands that you hardly find in dealerships locally like the Bentleys, Porsche, G-model Mercedes, AMG McLaren, Exotic Range Rovers and BMWs.

Bimbor any need for this?
Re: Pre-order...a NO-NO? by Jodesky(m): 8:16am On Jul 16, 2014
I don't think we need to subject this matter to unnecessary debate or strictures. Its simply a matter of choice and personal convenience. Whoever can wait for the certain or uncertain timeframe for a pre-order, let him take that route and others who elect to walk into a car shop are also at liberty to do so.
It all boils down to trust and reputation between the relevant parties.

Its a free world.

I concord....
I just cant imagine myself waiting for 3 months to drive a car, reason why I dont patronize pre-order.

Is it cheaper to pre-order??...cos I don't get why pple can't just walk into a car shop nd just buy one.if uve got the cash..instead of putting ur cash in the account of som1 u can't see...no offense to pre-order dealers ..just saying ma view ni ooooo
Re: Pre-order...a NO-NO? by tgoo315: 9:00am On Jul 16, 2014
dealers r too dishonest... that's the major problem. God help you if you pre-order a salvage. infact don't even think if buying salvage unless you have a ready team you know to restore the vehicle... dealers will milk you with every opportunity... run from salvage...
Re: Pre-order...a NO-NO? by oluwaseunla(m):
I'll have to agree with Jodesky on this one, it's a matter of choice. Each system has it's own pros and cons. People have walked into dealerships in Nigeria and regretted ever going that route too, we may not hear much about that on nairaland, but it happens a lot.

I think tgoo315 nailed it, it's all about the person you are dealing with, be it cotonou, Nigerian car mart or pre-order, God help you if your dealer is dishonest in any way.

I'm still a bit confused about the 4 months thingy though, I stand to be corrected but I think a ship takes 4 weeks to travel from U.S. to Nigeria and 15 days if you pre-ordered from Europe. Factor in customs and all that, I'll say add 2 weeks tops. Delays do happen, but then I feel if the dealer carries the buyer along, we won't have so much noise. 4 months should not be accepted as standard duration for pre-ordering from U.S. to Nigeria. It's time we demand more from these dealers. Of all the people who pre-ordered around me, only one got delayed, and the duration was still 8 weeks. My wife's car was parked in her compound within 34 days of payment.

I think all in all, do your home work, hope and pray that your dealer will be honest and you are good to go, whichever route you choose.

chelseabmw: Bimbor any need for this?
[b] I actually don't want to commend on this thread especially anyone created by bimbor but im forced to do so after seeing your question. Bimbor has gone through thick and thin in the hands of Inspired that at a point I taught Bimbor was either Inspired himself,Inspired agent or a sycophant trying to pull publicity stunt. You have created about 3-4 different threads on NL on your pre-order in 1 month. You have asked me and some other NLers lots of questions that should have been answered by the dealer. At a point you have forgotten I wasn't the one that pre-ordered your Vehicle grin, even till when the story of congestion in port came up.

Poo do happen in business but if a dealer keep in-touch with his customer for weekly updates, no matter how long the pre-order takes, so far he{buyer} can have access to you {the dealer} even in the middle of the night, that will give him some sort of assurance. Truth be told, i'm not in for any competition with anyone but Inspired has lost it somewhere from poor communication, delayed delivery, poor customer management, unsatisfied customer and after sales complaints. such has affected other dealers especially those that are yet to make a Name on NL cos one blow to one is a blow to all. Imagine if all these weekly complains was to be another dealer, I wonder what you {chelseabmw} would have done. As a Mod, I will advise you try and resolve issues between both parties than taking sides.

Back to OP; A Medical Doctor by profession, you got me confused even till this moment. I almost deleted you from my contact list weeks ago after reading some of your comments online. Truth be told, I wish I can see you personally to see how you looked like before I can conclude but I salute your patience and courage but that doesn't mean pre-order is a NO-NO. Getting your choice Car in Nigeria isn't an easy task as you have to consider so many factors that meets your taste. I have never seen a pre-order that was done sight unseen, I personally will buy a Car close to my proximity than buying from far distance with cheap price. I won't be surprise if you still come back here singing hyms & praise that your vehicle is the neatest Car you'v ever seen in Nigeria grin as this is the norm on NL now.

OP: Lesson has been learnt, your pre-order took 4 months like you told me
MOD: Be Neutral and try and resolves issues
Dealer: Put your house in order. Customers are King
NLers: I respect you people, you are all great but can spoil one's career in a second grin

[b]And how am I not neutral? I don't get that point you are raising here... when adeomola had problems with buyers and I attacked him where were you? Adeomola was someone I spoke with on phone everytime and he was on my bbm list too... 2days before I attached him I was about to credit his account for a 99 camry for a friend but because of attack I had to look for another dealer. Adeomola was surprised I attacked him because I was tired of trying to settle issues with himself n buyers... I still ve a munched chat btw myself n ade.....can't find ade on my list no more..When I use my call card to call customers and dealers everytime there is an issue I'm sure you are never there too...

Pls don't say what you don't know.... I do not take sides as I try my possible best to make sure these issues are settled on and offline even when users are here fighting.

Again when issues are raised I'm more busy trying to settle them offline so as to make both parties happy esp the buyer. Being neutral doesn't mean I will have to see a dealer have his imagine tarnished because of issues they can settle offline.

I not a car dealer here so I don't gain anything supporting dealers.. since I joined nairaland 2007 I have gotten 11 cars through this this site( 8 from contonou and 3 from dealers) even when I got my 2007 acura I had lots of issues recently with a dealer here from contonou but I just had to be patient n take issues calmly.

I remember when I got my first car through NL in 2008 a 1998 Toyota camry from contonou, I paid 1million cash into lanre's(contonou dealer) account without meeting him face 2 face (I even had issues with my ex gf then cos she said I foolish for doing a transaction online) and my car was delivered 3days later... this is the kind of forum nairaland was way back

calculusx I'm always neutral

Cheers
