A number of factors influence how we perceive risks associated with different situations.
Note: Risk perception isn't always rational.

1. People with social, political, or economic interests tend to downplay certain risks and emphasize others that suit their agendas.

For instance, we tolerate risks that we choose; such as driving, smoking, or overeating. While objecting to risks we cannot control; such as potential exposure to slight amounts of toxic substances.

2. Most people have difficulty understanding and believing probabilities.

We feel that there must be patterns and connections in events, even though statistical theory says otherwise. If the coin is turned up heads last time, we feel certain that it will turn up tails next time. In the same way, it is difficult to understand the meaning of a 1-in-10,000 risk of being poisoned by a chemical.

3. Our personal experiences are often misleading.

Most people expecially in this part of the world are guilty of this because of beingtoo religious, instead to be pragmatic. They feel it is more rare and unlikely to occur than is actually may be.

4. We have an exaggerated view of our abilities to control our fate.

Many people, including me are also guilty of this. We generally consider ourselves above-average drivers, safer than most when using appliances or power tools, and less likely than others to suffer medical problems. We also feel we can avoid hazards because we are wiser or luckier than others.

5. We always have an irrattional fear or distrust of certain technologies or activities that leads us to overestimate their dangers.

Nuclear power, for instance, is viewed as very risky, while coal-burning power plants seem to be familiar and relatively benign; in fact, coal mining, shipping, and combustion cause more death each year than nuclear power generation.

Thanks Doc.
Inasmuch as people take driving as a hobby, it is also a risk. The more one drives, the higher the chances of having a road accident. Might not result from the driver's fault, but could be as a result of the nature of the roads, or other road users.
