There was confusion on the premises of the Ekiti State High Court on Monday as hoodlums invaded the place to disrupt proceedings in a case challenging the eligibility of the Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, to contest the June 21 governorship election. However, Fayose has since won the election. The invasion took place shortly after the judge, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi, refused an application to set aside an order abridging the time for the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate to file his defence in the case filed on behalf of socio-political group, Ekiti-11 by a member, Mr. Femi Ajakaiye. The judge had adjourned sitting till 12 noon to prepare a ruling in a similar matter filed by the Citizen Popular Party before trouble started. As he was preparing to return for the continuation of the matter, angry youths besieged the court. The judge was smuggled out of the chambers through the back door to avoid being lynched by the aggressors. Judges, lawyers and others in court, including journalists, ran for their lives as the protesters went berserk and went after perceived opponents of the PDP. It could not be confirmed if the police made any arrest. The hoodlums numbering about a hundred were aggrieved about the perceived partiality of the judge handling the case. In the ensuing melee, the Chairman of Ado West Local Council Development Authority, Mr. Sunday Ibitoye, and Ajakaye, were attacked. The hoodlums had earlier engaged in an argument with securitry officials in the court room for preventing some of them from entering the court while allowing others in. The rampaging youths, who called the trial judge all sorts of unprintable names, alleged that he was partial in handling the matter for showing interest beyond official reasons. The judge, who had assumed jurisdiction in the case had ruled that he could not reverse his decision to abridge the time as the court had become “functus officio” having taken a decision on the issue. Contrary to the argument by the PDP, the court said the decision to abridge the time did not contravene Section 32 of the 1999 Constitution. Justice Ogunyemi said the PDP and Fayose failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the reasons why the court could not hear the substantive suit. The judge consequently dismissed the PDP’s application, saying the court could not set aside its own ruling of June 6, and that the time frame had been overtaken by events, which he maintained had rendered the whole exercise a mere academic exercise. Commenting, the Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Jide Awe, said, “We are back to the Idi Amin era in Ekiti where judges and lawyers are attacked in court. This is terrible. “But the APC has no case in the court and we were not there to witness the attack.” Also commenting, the PDP Publicity Secretary, Kola Oluwawole, urged Justice Ogunyemi to steer clear of the case alleging that he had connived with the ruling APC. Accusing the judge of bias, Oluwawole said, “The judge openly demonstrated in his ruling that he has jurisdiction on the matter and simultaneously commenced hearing of the matter without giving the respondent the opportunity to signify an appeal. “The PDP also condemns the barbaric action of the APC thugs who attacked voters that voluntarily voted for Ayo Fayose in the last governorship election.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/judge-flees-as-thugs-disrupt-proceedings-against-fayose/ |

The Federal Government is to take over reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, said on Monday. The minister said this in Lagos during a slide presentation of work on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway by Julius Berger Plc. The presentation took place at the company’s office complex in Ijora. Onolememen said that a new project design that involved five other ECOWAS member-countries was being undertaken. He gave the assurance that the project would soon be implemented. The minister said that a regional effort would be the best way to handle the road project. He said that he was the Chairman of a five- member Country Project Steering Committee on the project. “We will definitely get into the construction stage; at that time, all the challenges the Lagos State Government is having on that road will be a thing of the past because we will construct that road,” he said. The minister directed Julius Berger to complete rehabilitation of the Apapa/Oshodi Expressway in the next eight weeks. “Take remedial works into consideration; three months is too far and would be chaotic, considering the ember months; maybe, you should look for ways to get less construction time. “Let us see if we can terminate the emergency works by November,” he said. While inspecting the road, the minister said that rigid pavement was being used to reconstruct the road to cater for new load capacity which was not envisaged when the road was built in the 1970s. He said that the Federal Government decided to take drastic measures to rehabilitate the road due to public outcry, following perennial gridlock on the road in June and July. He said that the completion of a trailer park in Lagos was important as it would accommodate about 500 trucks and decongest the highway. “Given the clemency of weather, Julius Berger should be able to finish emergency repairs in another eight weeks. “The new design takes cognizance of heavy traffic. “Rigid pavement would be used to fight the menace of surface and underground water prevalence on the road,” he said. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Lagos State Government embarked on expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Road from four to 10 lanes in April, 2009. Construction of a light rail line and a Bus Rapid Transit corridor is part of the project, to enhance tourism and economic activities on this axis. source: http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-to-take-over-expansion-of-lagos-badagry-express-way/ |
A non-governmental organisation, the Christian Conscience Group, has called for the emergence of a Christian as the next governor of Lagos State in the 2015 general elections. National Chairman of the CCG, Chief Enoch Ajiboso, said this at the inauguration of the Lagos-East senatorial district of the organisation on Thursday, according to a statement. Ajiboso, while calling on Christians to actively participate in politics because it was not an ungodly act, called on public office holders across all levels to shun corruption and put the welfare of the people they are serving ahead of all other things. He said, “The CCG is a non-governmental movement clamouring for the mass participation of Christians in politics and demanding justice and fair play. Our main aim is to ensure that we have a Christian governor in Lagos State next year. This is our short term objective as a pressure group. It is not an agitation but a sort of plea to garner support for what we believe should be the case. “The Muslims are calling the shots because when it comes to political participation, they are more active. If you are not in there, you should not complain. People cannot be complaining without taking part in politics. That is why we are sensitising people that it is not ungodly to actively participate in politics. If politics is dirty, Christians should come out to wash and clean it.” National Coordinator of the group, Dr. Sam Ogedengbe, said the CCG was not concerned with endorsing any candidate ahead of the poll but rather their interest was to see a devoted Christian emerge the next governor of the state and serve the people equitably. “We are not a political party but an NGO, so we do not have a candidate that we will showcase. We don’t believe in this, our belief is to task the government on things we think should be done. God has been on our side and we have been making significant progress,” he said. source: http://www.punchng.com/politics/group-clamours-for-christian-governor-in-lagos/ |
Over 10 years after suffering severe burns following explosion from a lamp that was laden with adulterated kerosene, Nnamdi Onwukwe, an indigene of Abia State, is yet to recover from the incident. The looks on Onwukwe’s countenance when he visited THE PUNCH office in Calabar, Cross River State, easily gave him away as a young man in distress. The 24-year-old man told our correspondent that he had visited several hospitals including the National Hospital in Abuja and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital where it was concluded that he needed skin grafting to cover the open wound on his right leg. Unfortunately, Onwukwe , who is also expected to undergo surgery on his penis that was affected as well by the fire incident, said he has not been able to raise N800, 000 to fund the operations. He is begging members of the public to aid him financially for corrective surgery. Narrating his ordeal, Onwukwe said the incident occurred on February 16, 2004 following an explosion from a kerosene lamp that was filled with adulterated product. The young man, who said he specialises in laying tiles, disclosed that the incident happened in Aba, Abia State when he was residing with one of his aunties. He added that from then on, he had been going through traumatic experiences and moving from hospitals to traditional-medical homes without real improvement. Worst still, Onwukwe said he had for over 10 years found it difficult urinating with ease because the fire affected his penis. He said, “When the incident happened in Aba, I was taken to a nearby hospital where I was treated for three months without improvement. My father came and took me to our village (Nono- Oboro in Abia State)for traditional cure. I stayed there for eight years, yet the wound did not heal. “A friend of mine called Emmanuel came and took me to the National Hospital in Abuja, where after carrying out series of tests, they agreed on the conclusion that they will need to do skin grafting at the cost of N500,000. “The doctors said I will undergo surgery to correct the veins in my penis.” He said his father had given up on his situation because of lack of finance to carry out the surgeries. “My father did his best but it appears he has given up because of lack of money. He would have given me if he had,” he said. Onwukwe said he had approached his church for help but was told that he would get divine healing. He, however, showed appreciation to the medical unit of the new generation church that had at intervals dressed the wound and given him medications at no cost. The young man said he was also worried that he had been on constant sedative to enable him to sleep for many years, adding that this might soon begin to have negative effect on him. “I find it difficult to sleep at night. I have constantly been on sedative to make me sleep and I learnt it would have long-term effect,” Onwukwe lamented. The pathetic story of the young man did not just stop with the pains he had been nursing for the past 10 years. Despite having the knowledge of fixing tiles in building, Onwukwe said lamented that he hardly gets good job because of the present situation and that had made it difficult fending for himself. “I have not been able to fend for myself as a result of the injury. I can hardly go to work under this kind of condition. In fact, I have been squatting with some security guards since I came to Calabar two months ago,” he added. Onwukwe appealed to good-spirited members of the public to come to his rescue. http://www.punchng.com/feature/for-10-years-now-ive-found-it-difficult-urinating-victim-of-adulterated-kerosene-explosion/

Different strokes for different folks. Ever since some entertainers declared their intention to seek elective offices, the decision has been welcomed with mixed reaction and several controversies. The likes of Desmond Elliot, 9ice and KSB are some of the entertainers who have gone under public scrutiny over their political ambition. For popular Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot, whose eye is set on the Lagos State House of Assembly, the bone of contention has been on the name ‘Olushola’ which he has adopted. Until recently, a lot of Nigerians did not know the actor is a Yoruba man till his campaign posters surfaced online. In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor said that he has never denied his ethnicity. He said that while growing up, the name everybody called him was Shola. “Where I grew up in Surulere they know me by the name Shola and that is what they call me. I use Desmond Elliot which is my first and last name for my profession basically because I wanted to remain neutral, you could not tell where I come from. It is not because I am ashamed of where I come from. If I was, I would not be involved in Yoruba films or any Yoruba events neither will my kids have Yoruba names,” he said. For those who still doubt his roots, the dark skinned movie producer said that his father is from Lagos Island while his mother is from Delta State. Elliot said, “In the interviews that I have done, I have never denied that I am Yoruba, I always mentioned my names. People have always guessed where I come from and I left it open because truthfully I am a Nigerian. I am a Yoruba man and I would never deny other tribes that I have come in contact with. I am Yoruba by birth, I schooled in the North, I married someone from the South and my mother is from Delta State. “I am from Olowogbowo in Lagos Island; it is not something that is hidden. I tell people that say I don’t identify with the Yoruba race that I do so because I have done several Yoruba movies. At what point did the name become an issue, have I not been a worthy citizen of Lagos State?” Although the name Abolore Akande might not ring a bell, when 9ice is mentioned, the song Gongo Aso readily comes to mind. When the singer made public his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, many thought it was because of his dwindling career. But the singer told Saturday Beats that he had not failed in his career having seven albums under his belt. He also debunked speculations that his foray into politics is because he is going broke. “If my music career failed, I would not have seven albums under my belt. I am yet to see any of my colleagues that has seven albums. If your music is not appealing, you cannot release seven albums because there would be no marketer to buy them and there would not be any demand for them. When there is no demand, there can be no supply. I think some people want me to do what they want but I like doing what I want. If people in the industry are going right, I would go left if I believe that is the way to go. I don’t care if everybody is doing party songs, let them enjoy their party, I have my own principle and I know what I want to become. I am stating for a fact that there would be some of my colleagues that would not be remembered 10 years from now because of the kind of songs they have released. I don’t want to be like that. I might not be rich or popular but I would be a legend and that is my priority. My music career has not failed and that is not why I ventured into politics. “For those saying that I am into politics because I am going broke, I tell them that I am not a rich man, neither am I from a rich family; poverty is not far from me, I am close to it and I am not afraid of it. I have never been an artiste that would flaunt wealth, I cannot be who people want me to be. I would always be myself. I am neither hungry, rich nor poor, so that question doesn’t apply to me. It should be directed at whoever says he is rich, I have never said something like that. I am from a poor family,” 9ice said. Shortly after his candidate’s last week, his ex- wife, Tony Payne, tweeted advising people to be sure of their candidate and not to vote based on the candidate popularity. The message soon went viral with many people claiming that it was aimed at the singer. Reacting to the remarks, 9ice said that as far as his name was not mentioned in the message, it was not aimed at him. “As far as my name, constituency and race was not mentioned, I don’t believe it has anything to do with me. It might just be a coincidence but if someone comes out and says, ‘People check Akande Abolore very well before voting for him,’ then I would know it is directed at me. I don’t take assumptions for a direct message,” he said. Also, his colleague in the industry, Kenny Saint Best, claimed that her venture into politics is not because of a failing career. She said, “What is the yardstick for measuring success? If for 16 years I have been leading the pack; I have been part of the revolution in Nigerian music, even in the gospel sector, where are the people we started doing music together? You have to check my contemporaries. The problem with Nigerians is that they believe when you are not the rave of the moment, you are not successful and that is not true. You don’t have to always lead the pack and also you don’t have to be at the tail end, it pays to be in the middle and be consistent. I don’t have any other business aside doing music; it is music that has sustained me. Everything I do revolves round music. They say all this because I don’t make noise; if I want to make noise, Baba Keke is there to make noise for me from now till eternity. But the kind of platform I have would give others the opportunity to thrive, so I intentionally allowed my brother to downplay me. Jaywon, Tuface have come and gone but there is still KSB, it was his responsibility to give them the same platform he gave his sister at a point in time. I am still consistent; I won best gospel artiste of the year in 2010, 2011,2013. I was able to bring change to gospel music, a lot of people cannot make such a change, I brought gospel music to the forefront.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/from-the-tube-to-politics-desmond-elliot-9ice-ksb-speak-on-controversies/

Some members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect on Friday attacked a Borno market, killing scores of traders, a military source revealed He claimed that the insurgents who were looking for food to build their depleted stock invaded Mainok market, about 56 kilometres from Maiduguri on Friday afternoon, carting away foodstuffs and money belonging to the traders they killed. A Maiduguri resident, John Ibe, who was travelling along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road at about 1.30pm, said the hoodlums invaded the busy market around that time. He said, “I boarded a luxury bus from Lagos and when we got to Mainok at exactly 1.30pm, we heard heavy gunshots from the western part of the market and then sporadic gunshots. Hundreds of traders and residents fled the market in confusion, running to cross the highway to the other side while vehicles passing through the town were also making attempts to flee the town. There was so much confusion.” He said many fleeing traders were knocked down on the road by motorists in the midst of the confusion that ensued, adding to the death toll. He claimed to have seen many fleeing residents bleeding after being knocked down by the speeding vehicles. “Vehicles were hitting one another and the Boko Haram members kept shooting,” he added. A security personnel who also travelled on the road yesterday disclosed that the attackers first fired Rapid Propelled Grenade into the middle of the market before they started firing gunshots. “The death toll may be high because there were many people in the market,” the personnel who did not want to be named, said source: http://www.punchng.com/news/boko-haram-kills-scores-at-borno-market/ |

The founder of the Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, has defended the tuition fees charged by schools owned by the church, describing the provision of quality education as an expensive venture. Oyedepo said this while addressing journalists on Friday in Ota, Ogun State, at a media chat organised in commemoration of his 60th birthday coming up on September 27, 2014. Private schools in the country, including Covenant and Landmark universities, owned by the church are often criticised for being too expensive for average Nigerians to afford. But Oyedepo highlighted some of the church’s humanitarian programmes which include providing scholarships and bursary awards to assist students. He said, “I’m sure we all agree that education is expensive. Education carries cost; nothing of value is free. Our mission for years long, before we started any university or secondary school, was a bursary awarding church and we have not stopped doing that till tomorrow.” Oyedepo said that the church was committed to providing quality education to youths, adding that many Nigerians complain about the cost of education in private universities because they have got their priorities misplaced. “Our problem most of the time is priority; an average Nigerian can spend N1m on burial but to spend N200,000 on education (is a problem), because of wrong priority. “On a yearly basis, we have N1.5trn that Nigerians spend to overseas universities, so people thrive on it. Nigerians spend N463bn a month on recharge cards, how much are they paying for schools fees? So it’s all a matter of priority. This is the largest market for telephone in the world. Now, to pay N500,000, some people have only one son, they have huge business and houses all over the places, they will never pay it.” Speaking further, Oyedepo said he had chosen not to respond to the many controversial reports about him on the social media because he considered it as a waste of time. He said, “My understanding of opposition, persecution is simply someone’s opinion harshly expressed. Everybody has a right to his opinion. Today, millions follow after Christ but you will be surprised that when you get to Israel some people do not believe that Christ has come. “People have rights to their opinions. I naturally don’t feel it’s necessary (to respond). The energy I would need to react, I can use it to make moves. I have enough to think about than start running after a man who says you are a fool. “If he says you are a fool and you are behaving so, then he’s right. If you leave your job and start pursuing somebody who says you are a fool, he has already said so, your going around doesn’t change it. So why going around, why don’t you settle on your job and make moves? “I’ve also come to understand that those who make news hardly watch them, they are so busy making news while others are busy watching.” Asked about the challenges he has faced in life and in his ministry, Oyedepo said he had never dwelled on his challenges but that he has rather been fuelled by them. He said, “Life essentially is full of challenges, it is those challenges that make champions. You can’t emerge a heavy weight boxing champion except you receive punches. You can’t change classes in school except you write exams. “So to me, life is an adventure in challenges and I’ve said often that it is normal to be challenged but it’s unscriptural to be defeated. Challenges are the stepping stones for the making of champions.” At age 27, in 1981, Oyedepo started his ministry in Ilorin, Kwara State and sited his first church two years later in Kaduna State. At the media chat, he said that the church now has branches in 63 countries in the world and that the Faith Tabernacle in Ota, where he pastors, hosts “over 200,000 worshippers every Sunday morning in four services.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/oyedepo-defends-fees-charged-by-private-varsities/ |
A former Vice-President of the country, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has declared that he has more experience to lead Nigeria than incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. The Adamawa State-born politician, in an interview with AFP, a French news agency, on Friday, blamed the escalating spate of insurgency and violence in most parts of the North-East especially Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States on Jonathan. He insisted that the present administration had done nothing significant to address the fundamental issues and also improve the lives of the populace. He said, “This insurgency shouldn’t have lasted even six months. Within weeks, we (Obasanjo and I) crushed it because we did not neglect military training and, of course, we did not lack the leadership and the capacity to take decisions. “I told Nigerians that Jonathan did not have the capacity; he didn’t have the experience. He didn’t have anything and yet they gave him the chance, the opportunity. And they can now see the chance and the opportunity they gave him. Of course, I’m more experienced than he is. I believe my capacity cannot be compared with his, in all respect.” Atiku further slammed the administration for failing to initiate innovative reforms that would sporadically transform key sectors of the society while also addressing the welfare of the citizens, infrastructural development, corruption and safety of lives and valuables. Earlier this month, the former Vice-President signalled his intention to vie for the top job in the land after having lost out to Jonathan at the PDP primaries three years ago. Though, he is currently with the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, it is yet unclear if he would be handed the party’s ticket ahead of the likes of Muhammadu Buhari, a former Military Head of State and Aminu Tambuwal, incumbent Speaker of the lower legislative arm of the National Assembly. source: http://www.punchng.com/news/im-more-experienced-to-govern-than-jonathan-atiku/ |

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has stepped aside, ending political deadlock in Baghdad as the government struggles against insurgents. He resigned on state TV to make way for Haider al-Abadi, who was asked by Iraq's president to form a government. Mr Maliki had been under intense pressure to make way for Mr Abadi, a deputy speaker of parliament. An offensive led by Islamic State (IS) rebels in the north has triggered a security and humanitarian crisis. IS, a Sunni Muslim jihadist group formerly known as Isis, seized a large band of territory across northern Iraq and Syria this summer. The resulting turmoil has driven an estimated 1.2 million Iraqis from their homes. 'Brother Abadi' Appearing on state TV flanked by Mr Abadi and other politicians from the Shia Muslim majority, Mr Maliki spoke of the grave "terrorist" threat from IS before announcing his own exit. "I announce before you today, to ease the movement of the political process and the formation of the new government, the withdrawal of my candidacy in favour of brother Doctor Haider al-Abadi," he said. Analysis: Jim Muir, northern Iraq His eight years in office, Mr Maliki said, had been spent combating a mounting wave of terrorism and subversion. He insisted that he had stuck to the law and avoided violence even when he had come under personal attack but now, he said, he did not want to be the cause of the shedding of a single drop of blood. There had been fears that Mr Maliki might use the power base he built up through his control of the armed forces to stay in power. But, with his own party and the Shia clerical establishment, not to mention influential outside powers such as Iran and America and the entire international community backing Mr Abadi, the writing was clearly on the wall for Mr Maliki's hopes of clinging to power. He had been insisting that he should have the right to form the government, as leader of the biggest bloc in parliament. But his spokesman, Ali Mussawi, told AFP news agency that Mr Maliki was dropping his complaint against President Fuad Masum. The resignation brought an end to eight years of often divisive rule, when Mr Maliki's government was accused of favouring the country's Shia majority. Mr Abadi is one of Iraq's most senior politicians, having held several high-profile posts since returning from exile in 2003. He is regarded by some as a moderate within Mr Maliki's Dawa party, and has shown more of a willingness to compromise than his predecessor. US support US National Security Adviser Susan Rice praised Mr Maliki's decision to step down, describing it as a "major step" towards uniting Iraq. Earlier, US President Barack Obama offered his support to the prime minister-designate. "He [Mr Abadi] still has a challenging task in putting a government together, but we are modestly hopeful that the... situation is moving in the right direction," Mr Obama said. Mr Obama also paid tribute to US forces for an operation in the north of Iraq that he said has helped tens of thousands of people displaced by IS. Many of them, mostly from the Christian and Yazidi religious minorities, were besieged on Mount Sinjar after being forced to flee their homes. Mr Obama said US forces had helped break the siege and the situation had greatly improved. However, the US will continue to carry out air strikes and support Iraqi and Kurdish forces fighting IS, he said. Thousands of Yazidis have reached camps inside Iraq's Kurdish region, most with no possessions but the clothes on their backs, AFP news agency reports from Dohuk. Conditions in the camps are spartan, with one man, Khodr Hussein, saying: "We went from hunger in Sinjar to hunger in this camp." On Friday, the UN Security Council in New York is expected to pass a resolution aimed at punishing the recruitment and financing of foreign fighters for IS. The BBC's correspondent at the UN, Nick Bryant, says the resolution, drafted by the UK, will come with the threat of sanctions as well as a blacklist targeting six people, including the spokesman of IS. August 15 2014 00:37 BBC 2014 Paul Wood reports from Mount Sinjar, from where many refugees have escaped, but some 'stragglers' remain |
Israel and the Palestinians have begun a fresh five-day ceasefire in Gaza, agreed at the end of a three-day truce. As the ceasefire was announced, Israel launched air strikes in response to alleged rocket fire from Gaza. There were no more reports of violence overnight, and the two sides were expected to continue indirect talks mediated by Egypt in Cairo. The Israelis launched a military operation in Gaza on 8 July to stop militant attacks from Gaza. 'Forbiddingly difficult' Hamas, which controls Gaza and is involved in the Cairo talks, has denied its members launched rockets at Israel on Wednesday night. Israeli military spokesman Peter Lerner said on Twitter: "No need to jump to conclusions. I don't know who launched 10pm (19:00GMT) rocket at Israel." There was no immediate report of casualties from either side. Palestinian sources say the truce extension will create a window for further negotiations. But the BBC's Kevin Connolly in Gaza says future talks are likely to be forbiddingly difficult. Officials from both sides have been communicating their demands through Egyptian intermediaries in Cairo. The talks are aimed at finding a more durable solution to the conflict in Gaza. Demands postponed The Palestinian side wants the blockade on Gaza to be lifted, while Israel wants the territory to be fully disarmed. Israel has indicated it may agree to relax parts of the blockade, Egyptian and Palestinian sources said. Other proposals under discussion include reducing the "no-go" zone in Gaza, and increasing the offshore fishing zone for Gaza fishermen. Egyptian mediators have proposed that discussion of other demands, such as the opening of a seaport in Gaza and the return of the remains of two dead Israeli soldiers, be postponed. About 2,000 people have died since the fighting in Gaza began on 8 July. Those killed include more than 1,900 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the United Nations. Sixty-four Israeli soldiers have been killed in the violence and three civilians in Israel have also died. Tension between Gaza and Israel rose after the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in June. Israel blamed the killings on Hamas, though the group denied involvement. Tension rose further after the suspected revenge killing of a Palestinian teenager in Jerusalem on 2 July. Six Jewish suspects were arrested over the youth's abduction and murder. Israel occupied Gaza in 1967 and only pulled its troops and settlers out in 2005. However, it still exercises control over most of Gaza's borders, water and air space. Egypt controls Gaza's southern border. Are you in Gaza or Israel? You can share your views and experiences with us by emailing haveyoursay@bbc.co.uk using 'Gaza truce' in the subject heading.
