A REVIEW OF PLANTAIN PRODUCTION, PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS The soils in Nigeria fall into four zones: (a) the northern zone of sandy soils; (b) the interior zone of laterite soils; (c) the southern belt of forest soils; and (d) the zone of alluvial soils. Forest soils in the southern belt are naturally fertile as a result of dense vegetation cover. This zone also contains laterite soils. Forest soils are good for cocoa, palm and rubber production and are also the main soil types in the plantain and banana producing regions of Nigeria. Plantain production is mainly in the Southern states of Nigeria, which include Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Enugu, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Oyo states . Annual rainfall in these areas is usually above 1000 mm year-1, spread over 7 to 9 months. Plantain is transported to other parts of the country from these states.

CONCLUSION Plantain production in Nigeria is still very much in the hands of small scale farmers who incorporate it into different farming systems. The effort of these farmers should be collaborated with a good and adequate social infrastructure, like better roads and transport and efficient extension services. Future research on plantains should address the issue of intensive cropping and nutrient and water requirements to increase productivity both on-station and on-farm with farmers’ participation. This will assist in meeting the ever increasing demand of this crop by both household consumers and the new small scale industries. With the recent interest in establishment of plantain farms, as evident by the increase in cultivation/harvested areas, the country’s productivity will be tripled in the next few years. It is believed that the country will for a long time be one of the highest producers of plantain around the world.

About four to seven suckers, depending on banana or plantain cultivar, will sprout three weeks after removal of the apical dominance. Sprouted suckers are detached immediately once they attain three to four leaves (usually when they measure 20-30 cm in height). Detached suckers are transferred directly to the field

Propagators are used for sprouting of new
seedlings and hardening of the subsequent
sprouts. Simple propagators can be constructed
using fairly cheap materials, such as bamboo and
polythene sheets. Enterprising banana seedling
producers could use iron rods and cast a concrete
floor. It is important that at least 50% shade is
provided and that the fragile seedlings are well-
protected, by constructing a shade above the
propagators. A convenient size for a propagator is
1.5 (width) x 5.0 (length) x 1 (height) meter.
Propagators should be kept clean and completely
covered with transparent polyethylene sheets.
Humidity and temperature should be high. The
propagator compartments can be made using
wood or bricks and should measure not more
than 0.5 m in height. Continue reading by

For advice and implementation of irrigation infrastructure we offer incomparable service. Why? Because we know water and respect it as your most precious liquid asset.

I will like to know what drip irrigation systems you have to cover 1 hectare of land which I intend to use for late season maize farming and vegetables. Cost as well. Thanks

Plantain (Musa spp.) occupies a strategic position for rapid food production in Nigeria. It is ranked third among starchy staples. The country’s output doubled in the last 20 years. Production, which is concentrated in the Southern part of the country, still remains largely in the hands of small scale farmers who, over the years, have ingeniously integrated it into various cropping systems. Production is male dominated, while women essentially handle marketing. The inadequate knowledge of improved cultural practices of the crop by the farmers, an inefficient system of extension services and skewness of specialization in areas of research are part of the reasons why yield potential of plantain is still low in the country. Contributions of plantain to the income of rural households in major producing areas in Nigeria continue to increase tremendously in the last few years. Unlike some other starchy staples whose demand tend to fall with rising income, demand for plantain increases with increasing income. With the potential for industrial processing of plantain, which has recently been adopted, and the increased interest in production by small and large scale farms in the country, it is believed that Nigeria will continue to be one of the world’s largest producers of plantain.

FOR A SUCSSESSFUL PLANTAIN
You need to make sure that u source for the rightful suckers which are the once we have here..
The spacing in which u are planting .
Numbers of suckers that can contain one acre which u can finally use to calculate what hectres ,acres or plots u want to plant ...
BENEFITS AND INCOME OF ONE ACRE OF PLANTAIN FARM
In one acre of land ,you will need 750 suckers planted with the spacing of 3by3 meter and in between the meter left can still contain other crops like peaniple, or other crop but make so sure that ,the crop do not hinders...
The income for one acre of plantain is calculated by 750 divided 12 which is 62.2 let say 64 multiply by N8,000 equal to N512,000.00 is your initial income
This is the brake down in one acre.
Sucker planted is 750
Market women buy in dozen which is 12 is one dozen
750÷12=62.2
That is 62.2 dozen is what one acre produced
And market women do buy one dozen for N8,000
Now multiply 62.2 dozen with N8000 =512,000.00 is ur initial income for one acre
Thank sir Clifford for Sedulus Plantain Farming

Suckers
Plantains are vegetatively propagated, most often from suckers (shoots that grow from a bud at the base of the plant) or from corms (underground bulbs known as rhizomes). The use of whole corms is very laborious so it is more common to grow from small pieces of corm. There are three different types of banana suckers which are produced by the mother plant; maidenheads, sword suckers and water suckers. Maidenheads have a large pseudostem which does not produce fruit. Sword suckers have a narrow base, short pseudostem and narrow, blade-like leaves. They produce healthy, fruitful pseudostems when they mature Water suckers have short pseudostems and broad leaves. Water suckers are not strongly attached to the rhizome and generally produce weaker plants and less fruit. Maidenheads and large sword suckers are preferred over water suckers.

Unlike starting other tree farms, starting a plantain farm and growing plantain are easier and less complicated. Although growing plantain still require ones attention, the level of skill required is not as intensive as other trees.

HOW TO START PLANTAIN CULTIVATION
1. Do you have an empty land? if yes you are well positioned, it grows in all kinds of soil but best in a loamy soil
2. Prepare the soil by decomposing it with decaying plants, mulch etc., this is to protect the suckers from the harsh sun that may dehydrate it
3. Get plantain suckers from heathy plant and cut space them
4. In case you wish to add fertilizers, use very little and ensure they are mostly good NPK fertilizers.
5. Do not weed the plantain with any form of modern implement especially at their early stage of development, use mostly hand to weed so as not to harm the tender sucker
6. water them as may be needed
