There are many classifications of computers using different criteria. We shall deal with only one such classification which roughly speaking, is based on speed, size and function of the computer. There are, however, relative to time, as we shall see in the next section.

a. Super Computers are the largest, fastest and most powerful computer. Also called Monster or Maxi computer, super computer are used in special application requiring enormous number of calculation in a very short period of time. This is because they are extremely fast (as far back as the early 1980s, they could do 600 million calculations per second). Areas where super computer are used include Weather forecasting, Weapon research and Space travel they are very expensive and scarce.

b. Mainframe computers (Mainframes) are the largest and fastest among general use computers. Such computers can be used by many people at a time and area, they are therefore used by large corporation and governmental organization. They come next to super computers.

c. Mini computers (Minis) are smaller version of mainframe. They are slower, smaller and cheaper than mainframe computer. They also support multiple users (though not as many as Mainframe) and it can be found in universities, research laboratory and manufacturing plants. They can be used by more than one person.

d. Micro Computers (Micros) are the smallest and the least expensive among the computers. They are portable and come in different sizes. They are something’s called desk top computers, because they can sit on desk top. Another variation of their name is personal computer (PCs) since they are used by one person (not multiple users). Smaller version of micros can be held on the lap and are called laptop. There are also notebooks that are book size. Pockets computers have been introduced recently.

I upgraded from a Pentium 3 desktop computer to pentium 4, 2.5ghz. Discovered that my small china generator which I normally use to operate the former system could not carry the load untill I increased the power GREATLY. When its switched on, u can feel d great impact on d gen. My question is: does the power consumption of a desktop computer increases as the speed of the processor increases?

Thanks for having confidence in me with regards to computers, the cause of your computer problem is just the power pack, it needs to be change to corresponde to the changes with your upgrading the system. thanks
