Israel built and controlled the border with Egypt over several years. Then in the late 2000s, Egypt took control of the border on the condition that it will only allow people and not goods to cross into Gaza. During that time, US and Israel also funded the expansion of the previously existing fence and buffer zone across the border with Egypt.

In 2022/23, Israel took control of the border once again and has kept it shut ever since. Israel is not allowing Palestinians to leave or enter through that border anymore and is not allowing aid to come in either.

The airspace over Israel is not safe for commercial flights. Hence, flights were cancelled, and even border countries like Jordan are restricting their own airspace.
