kstadaura:14 horses and 7 men walking. I did not have any formular o. Just wisdom to know that the number of humans on the ground should be half the number of horses since half of the ow ers are ridding and the number of men in total equal the number of horses. |

delishpot:hmmm... Same answer here. A horse has twice as many legs as a man, and there are twice as many horses walking as there are walking men. So the ratio of horses legs to men legs is 4:1. Simply divide the total number of legs with the number of legs a man has. (70/2) So the number of men would be = (1/5) × 35 = 7 men. Number of horses would thus be 14. I don't have your wisdom, so I had to solve it in my head ![]() |

kstadaura:ok. Initial number of marked donkeys=x=150. Now, out of the the newly captured donkeys, 5 had already been marked. So percent of already marked donkeys in the new sample is approximately equal to the percentage of marked donkeys. I.e 150/y * 100=5/50 * 100 => y=(50/5)*(100/100)*150=1500 therefore number of donkeys =1500. |

kstadaura:sorry I'm late guys! I saw this yesterday, but my battery was low. This morning, I saw some people have given answers. But no workings. Hmmmn. So, maybe I should do that . . . let's get to it. There are three birds in the bag. Let the number of sparrows be x Let the number of pigeons be y Let the number of ducks be z Let the total number of birds be t. From question, t = x + y + z . . . . 1 From question, there are x number of sparrows, as well as 6 of the other kinds. The same is true for the duck and pigeon. Hence, t = x + 6 . . . . .2 t = y + 6 . . . . . .3 t = z + 6. . . . . . .4 eqn 2, 3, 4 are all equal to t and are therefore equal to one another. Hence, x + 6 = y + 6 = z + 6 Subtract 6 from all sides, and eureka. x = y = z ! Hence, eqn 1 becomes t = x + x + x since both y and z are equal to x. t = 3x . . . . . 5 But t is equal to x + 6 Hence, x + 6 = 3x Collect like terms, 6 = 2x Divide both sides, and finally, x = 3. Replace this in equation 5 and t = 3(3) t = 9 Woah . . . yeah, they were totally right. ![]() Ah, I see timonski has solved the next question. kstadaura:3000 donkeys. If 5% of all donkeys tagged were 150 that means 5% of 3000 is 150 so the foest has 3000 donkeys and out of them 150 are tagged which is 5% of the donkey poopulation. Hope I gorrit. |

Hence, y = 2x and z = 3x Substituting these into the equation 1, 10x + 5(2x) + 3x = 690 10x + 10x + 3x = 690 23x = 690 x = 30 So there are 30 ten naira notes there. y = 2x y = 60 So there are 60 five naira notes there. z = 3x z = 90 So there are 90 five naira notes there. ![]() |

Oahray:I wanted to point out the fact that the op's question was an ambiguous one,but i just say make I leave am. He said AN EQUAL number of men and horses are going somewhere. If the number of horses equals men,then how come we have 14horses but 7men? Secondly,when he said "70legs walking on the ground" was he refereeing to just the number of men who aint on their horses back, or legs in general,be it that of a horse or man? If he was referring to legs in general,then he shouldn't have repeated the word "walking" twice,because having done that,walking automatically now refers to just men not riding horses.. Some of us actually read in between the lines. Anyway,I await your response. I might be the wrong one here. @Kstadaura... Na wetin make me kuku stop dey solve cos i no dey like am wen I solve something finish,only to discover it's not correct because there was an error somewhere not on my part. The other naira kobo problem was one. Solved and solved for 40,000...then you change am to 40kobo.. Kept solving for 40kobo and knew something was wrong. Scrolled back up only to see that youve modified it to 0.40kobo.. Which levels na? |

Ksslib:sorry this is coming late. em... I actually was aiming at getting the number of horses by getting the number of men walking. I focused on the number of human legs on the ground, as against horses. An equal number of men are on horse back, which brings the total number of men to 14, same as the number of horses (each man has a horse). |

Oahray:I took same approach too;get number of horses by getting number of men walking first. I guess the error came from reading too much meaning into the word "walking". So much for reading in between the lines,and the Op sef, didn't help matters at all. Thanks. |
