The world's favorite search engine, Google, has already developed a highly complex algorithm of its own when it comes to serving search results to its users. Webmasters and website owners around the world try their best to keep up with Google's algorithm, but with each new update, it keeps getting difficult. The latest addition to Google's list of metrics to bear in mind when deciding a website's page rank is the use of a secure connection. Soon enough, Google will now start prioritizing secure HTTPS URLs over non-secure HTTP ones. As such, if you have a website that uses an SSL certificate and serves pages via HTTPS, and a similar website with nearly the same quality of content, but sans SSL certificate and using non-secure HTTP to serve pages, Google will rank the first site (the one with HTTPS) higher than the second one (the one without HTTPS). Of course, HTTPS is not the only deciding factor, and tried and tested methods such as link-building, quality of content, website design, etc. will all still continue to come into play. But yes, going forward, HTTPS will be *one* of the many factors that Google will consider when deciding a page's rank. If you an existing website owner, you can redirect your HTTP visitors to HTTPS. Google has published a detailed blog post explaining the reasons behind its decision to bump the page rank of SSL users, and also outlining the best practices for SSL usage. What do you think of this move by Google? Share your views in the comments below! Source |
