Please go and read about "Selective Mutism". Sounds like you may need to take your son for an assessment. A little girl in my family was like that. We had to engage the services of a speech pathologist. Selective mutism is due to social anxiety but can be reversed.

Does the girl now communicate well amidst of strangers

It is very likely your child is introverted.Introverted children do not really enjoy being around strangers and will seek solitude but such children will seem extroverted when around an environment/people he/she is used to being around like his/her family and friend(if he makes friends,they usually have small circles of friend).Google and read more about this personality type and how to care for them,it may be of help

Every woman, at sometime in her life, has faced the undeniable dilemma of needing to use the bathroom around a man.
Every woman has faced the tug of warbetween her head and her bottom. Every woman has cursed God and herself for having such a thing as an anus.
For now, there’s nothing to do but either get used to the pain or learn not to give a f*ck. I strongly suggest the latter.
At the same time, however, I still pray for my daughters, and their daughters, and their daughters’ daughters because ladies, this is just the beginning of a lot of sh*t you’re going to have to put up with.
So for all women either just experiencing the pain or looking for some compassion, here are the irrational thoughts we’ve all had before taking a sh*t at our boyfriend’s place.
